For most newcomers, the simplest first purchase is KINGDOM HEARTS HD 1.5 + 2.5 ReMIX, starting with KINGDOM HEARTS FINAL MIX. It bundles the first adventure with several follow-ups. If you already want the broader saga, KINGDOM HEARTS Collection [I~III] is scheduled to release on October 8, 2026; as of October 7, it is not yet available.

Which Kingdom Hearts collection should a new player buy?

Choose based on how much of the series you want now, the platform you own, and whether you want physical media or a digital download.

Option Best fit What it includes Important trade-off
KINGDOM HEARTS HD 1.5 + 2.5 ReMIX Most first-time players who want to begin with the original adventure and continue through several earlier entries. KINGDOM HEARTS FINAL MIX, Re:Chain of Memories, KINGDOM HEARTS II FINAL MIX, 358/2 Days (HD cutscene compilation), Birth by Sleep FINAL MIX, and Re:coded (HD cutscene compilation). Two of its six story experiences are cutscene compilations, not full playable remasters. Platform availability differs; Nintendo Switch has a native version.
KINGDOM HEARTS Collection [I~III] Players who want the broader saga together and are ready to buy the larger bundle. 1.5+2.5 ReMIX, 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, and III + Re Mind. Scheduled for October 8, 2026 on Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Microsoft Store on Windows. Its physical version requires an internet connection to download additional data.

Square Enix presents 1.5+2.5 ReMIX as a useful starting point for players new to the franchise, and the publisher describes the larger collection as beginning there, moving through 2.8, and culminating in III + Re Mind. That makes the collection sequence a practical way to approach the games without claiming there is one universally optimal order for every side story. See the Square Enix series collection information and the PlayStation listing for 1.5+2.5 ReMIX.

What is actually playable in 1.5 + 2.5 ReMIX?

The collection contains six story experiences, but they are not all full games you control. Four are playable titles; 358/2 Days and Re:coded are presented as HD cutscene compilations. If you expect to play through all six in the same way, that distinction matters. The compilations let you follow those stories, but they are not playable remasters.

Check platform compatibility before buying

Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 are different editions

Nintendo lists a native Nintendo Switch version of 1.5+2.5 ReMIX. The upcoming Collection [I~III] is listed for Switch 2, not original Switch. Nintendo says Switch 2 software is not compatible with the original Switch. Its Switch 2 listing estimates a 54.2 GB file size; file sizes can change. Nintendo also says save data can transfer from the Switch version to Switch 2, but not in the reverse direction. Check Nintendo’s Switch 2 product listing for the current details.

Verify the exact platform and edition

For the all-in-one collection, confirm that the store listing matches your console or Windows storefront before ordering. Availability and release timing can vary by region. Square Enix’s collection page also notes discounts for eligible owners of certain previous digital editions; eligibility depends on platform and title, so verify it in your own regional store rather than assuming every prior purchase qualifies.

How to choose between the two purchases

  1. Decide how much of the saga you want now. Choose 1.5+2.5 ReMIX for a focused entry point; consider Collection [I~III] if you want the broader bundle.
  2. Match the edition to your device. Check the platform listed on the store page, especially if you own an original Switch rather than Switch 2.
  3. Choose a format that suits your setup. The all-in-one collection has physical and digital options, but its physical version still requires an internet connection to download additional data.
  4. Set expectations for the cutscene compilations. In 1.5+2.5 ReMIX, 358/2 Days and Re:coded are story compilations rather than playable remasters.
  5. Check regional pricing and eligibility yourself. Store, region, platform, edition, and promotions affect the final offer; no single price applies everywhere.

What the series-wide sales figure does—and does not—tell you

Square Enix Holdings reported more than 38 million units in global package shipments and digital sales for the Kingdom Hearts series in 2025. This is a publisher-reported series-wide milestone, not a sales figure for an individual game and not evidence of any particular entry’s quality or current popularity. See the Square Enix Holdings FY2025 report.
