Before buying a gaming blind box, check what variants it can contain, how any stated odds are calculated, whether a full case can include duplicates, and what the seller allows if you change your mind or find a defect. A physical blind box is a sealed collectible with an unknown variant; a video-game loot box is a randomized virtual item, so different seller terms and rules apply.
What to check before you buy
- Series and contents: Confirm the exact series, number of possible figures, and whether it includes a rare or “secret” variant.
- Odds: Look for a probability for each figure or rarity. Check whether it applies per box, pack, or sealed case; marketing phrases such as “rare” are not a probability.
- Case and duplicate rules: Find out whether a case-level guarantee exists, whether regular figures can repeat, and whether the seller or manufacturer exchanges duplicates.
- Returns and defects: Read the current seller policy before opening the package. Separate change-of-mind returns from claims for an item that is defective or not as described.
- Authenticity: If the box uses a game title, character, or logo, check that the product is licensed.
- Evidence: Save the listing, stated odds, receipt, packaging, and return terms in case you need to contact the seller.
What are the odds?
Odds describe probabilities, not a promise about what will be in your particular box. A disclosed chance of pulling a rare figure does not guarantee that figure in one purchase. Before comparing products, determine what the probability refers to and whether the seller explains how it was calculated.
Disclosure rules vary by jurisdiction and platform. China’s State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) trial guidelines, published June 15, 2023, call for prominent pre-purchase information including product names, types, styles, draw rules, distributions, limited-edition quantities, odds, and value range. They also prohibit manipulating results or arbitrarily changing probabilities. These are China-specific guidelines, not a worldwide standard: SAMR’s blind-box guidelines.
As a US marketplace example, TikTok Shop’s seller policy dated July 30, 2026 requires covered mystery-box and blind-box listings to state the exact item quantity and disclose all variations; it requires odds when outcomes are unequal. It also requires sealed original manufacturer packaging and accurate product images, and sets a $100 maximum listing price for covered listings. That cap is a TikTok Shop rule, not a general legal price limit: TikTok Shop’s US seller policy.

Will I get duplicates? Does a full case guarantee every figure?
There is no universal duplicate-free or replacement guarantee established for gaming blind boxes. Do not assume that a sealed case contains one of every regular figure. Check the exact product’s current terms for a case guarantee, the possibility of duplicates, and any exchange conditions. If the seller does not state a guarantee, treat one as unconfirmed rather than relying on collector assumptions or claims about other series.
Can you return an opened blind box?
Return rights depend on where you buy and the seller’s terms. Distinguish a change-of-mind return from a remedy for a defective item or one that differs from its description; an exclusion for the first does not necessarily settle the second. Check the policy before opening the packaging and consult the relevant local consumer authority if a dispute arises.

- Each of these vinyl mini figures includes a Twisted Cryptids foil promo card! Collect them all to prove to your friends that Cryptids are real and you’re not crazy…
- Note: If you order multiple singles, you are likely, but not guaranteed, to end up getting multiple of the same character rather than different characters.
China’s SAMR guidance provides a specific example, not a rule for other countries. For an online sale there, a seller may exclude an opened blind-box item from the seven-day no-reason return rule only after giving sufficient notice and obtaining confirmation for that individual purchase; preselected consent alone is not enough. A clearly identified complete set sold as a whole remains subject to the applicable online seven-day return rule. For goods that fail quality requirements or differ from what was represented, the guidance says the seller must meet applicable return, replacement, or repair duties: SAMR’s blind-box guidelines.
Physical blind boxes are not video-game loot boxes
A physical blind box is a tangible product sold in sealed packaging; a video-game loot box contains randomized virtual items, sometimes bought with money or virtual currency and sometimes earned through gameplay. The buying, disclosure, and refund rules for one should not be assumed to apply to the other.

The UK Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) described industry-led commitments for in-game loot boxes in an update published July 18, 2023. These included parental consent controls for minors, spending controls, probability disclosure, data transparency, and lenient refunds. The update said the government was not taking forward legislation at that time and would keep options under review; it is a dated UK policy position, not a worldwide rule. DCMS also described an association between loot-box purchases and problem gambling but said the evidence had not established causation: DCMS update on loot boxes.
For in-game purchases, check the game’s probability disclosures, available spending limits and parental controls, and the publisher or platform’s refund process. Xbox says its own Game Studio games disclose probabilities by item category and states that it will not use player data to reduce the odds or results of receiving a valuable item. That is Xbox’s policy for its own games, not an industry-wide guarantee: Xbox Game Studios Loot Box Policies.

Rules depend on the place and platform
Policy examples have different scopes and dates. China’s SAMR published blind-box trial guidelines in 2023; DCMS’s 2023 update concerned UK video-game loot boxes; Singapore’s February 12, 2026 parliamentary reply said regulations were being drafted and that standardized odds disclosure would be considered, not that such a requirement was already in force. TikTok Shop’s July 30, 2026 rules apply to covered sellers on that US marketplace, not to all US retailers or federal law.
For Singapore, the reply is available from the Ministry of Home Affairs. Check the current rules where you live and the specific store or marketplace terms before buying.
