How to Choose the Best Settings for Smooth Performance in an Open-World Simulation Game

No graphics preset suits every open-world game or PC. Use a repeatable route to test settings, find the actual bottleneck and balance smoothness with visual quality.

There is no universal settings preset that makes every open-world simulation game run smoothly: the right balance depends on the game, your PC, the scene and your display resolution. Start with the game’s recommended or a moderate preset, then change one setting at a time and compare performance in the same demanding location. Keep the highest visual quality that meets your own smoothness target—not just the settings that look best in an empty area.

Why the best settings depend on your game and PC

Graphics options do not have a fixed performance cost across games. A setting’s impact can change with the game’s implementation, your hardware, output resolution and what is happening on screen. NVIDIA’s setting-by-setting guide for Control, for example, pairs visual comparisons with performance measurements for that specific title; it also notes that the cost of distance scaling varies by location, settings and gameplay scenario. Those results are useful as an example of how to evaluate options, not as a settings ranking or benchmark for another game: NVIDIA’s Control graphics and performance guide.

Even the names of options can mislead: two games’ “shadows” or “view distance” settings need not behave alike. Test the options your game actually provides, and decide whether the performance gain is worth the visual change.

Set a baseline before changing anything

Write down the conditions you are starting from. This helps you identify which change made a difference and whether the result addresses the problem you actually have.

  • Ready for Upgrades – Designed with tool-less access, easily swap out components, ensuring future-proof performance for years to come.
  • Game title and version, CPU, GPU and RAM.
  • Display resolution and refresh rate.
  • Current frame rate, if available, and whether the main problem is low average performance, uneven motion, stutter or display/input latency.
  • Your desired outcome: for example, a steadier experience rather than maximum visual detail. Without your display and performance data, no exact frame-rate target or graphics values can be prescribed.

Load a repeatable save or location and use the same route for comparisons. Include the situations that stress your game when they occur: travel, crowds, foliage, weather, busy settlements or other demanding scenes. An empty area can make a change look successful when it has not solved the problem you encounter during play.

Use a controlled tuning workflow

  1. Start with a baseline. Apply the game’s recommended preset, if available, or choose a moderate preset. Record how the same route looks and feels before making further changes.
  2. Check which GPU the game uses. On a Windows PC with multiple GPUs, confirm that the game is assigned to the intended one before tuning graphics. Windows documents per-app GPU preferences under Settings > System > Display > Graphics; available options depend on the system. See Microsoft’s DirectX guidance on graphics settings and windowed-game optimizations.
  3. Change one option at a time. Adjust an in-game setting, repeat the same route and note both the performance and the visual difference. Do not change several game options and driver-panel controls together; otherwise, it is harder to tell which change helped.
  4. Keep or undo the change. Keep it only if the improvement matters in the scenes where you need it and the visual loss is acceptable. Work through another option only after recording the result.

If the GPU is the limiting factor, test resolution and upscaling

Lowering resolution or graphics quality can improve frame rate, with a potential loss in image quality. Microsoft describes that general trade-off in its Automatic Super Resolution documentation. If your game offers a supported upscaling mode, compare it with your current output or render resolution. Check fine detail, motion and temporal artifacts—not just a quick look at a still image.

Automatic Super Resolution is not a universal option: Microsoft limits it to eligible hardware, games and graphics formats. If it is unavailable on your system, that does not mean another in-game upscaler is unavailable; check the game’s own supported settings.

Test costly visual options selectively

If your game exposes them, test options such as ray tracing, shadows, volumetric effects, reflections, view distance and foliage in small steps. These are candidates to evaluate, not a universal list of settings to turn down: their performance costs and visual value depend on the title and scene. For each change, ask whether the scene becomes meaningfully smoother and whether the removed detail matters to you.

In Control, NVIDIA’s guide shows why per-setting comparisons are more useful than assuming an option’s name predicts its cost. Its results apply to that game and its tested context; they do not establish a universal order in which other games’ settings should be reduced.

Match display synchronization to the problem

Variable refresh rate for changing frame rates

A compatible variable refresh rate (VRR) display adjusts its refresh rate in response to the game’s frame rate. Microsoft lists AMD FreeSync, NVIDIA G-SYNC and VESA Adaptive-Sync as examples in its DirectX display guidance. If your monitor and game setup support VRR, enable the compatible option and verify that it is active. Check your current display before considering a purchase; a VRR monitor can improve synchronization behavior, but it does not make the game render more frames.

A frame cap for inconsistent motion

If motion feels uneven even when the average frame rate seems adequate, try a stable in-game frame cap and compare the result. The suitable cap depends on your display’s refresh rate and the performance your system can sustain, so an exact value cannot be recommended without those details. AMD’s Radeon graphics FAQ documents frame-rate targeting in Radeon software and notes that, for DirectX and Vulkan applications, VSync control may be in the game rather than the driver panel.

Know when graphics changes are unlikely to help

Find the limiting part of the system before changing many global driver settings or buying hardware. Microsoft’s developer guidance discusses CPU-limited and GPU-limited cases, but it is not a consumer benchmark or a guaranteed diagnosis for a particular PC: Microsoft Learn’s hardware-accelerator guidance. If lowering graphics settings does not improve the problem, the limiting factor may not be the setting you changed; avoid treating that result alone as proof that a specific component needs replacing.

Choose the setting profile you can sustain

In your before-and-after notes, compare performance and consistency in demanding scenes, clarity at your display’s native resolution, the visual value of the reduced effect, scaling artifacts, hardware and game compatibility, and display synchronization. Keep the settings that preserve the details you care about while meeting your chosen smoothness target. Revisit the comparison after changing the game, resolution or display configuration, since each can change the result.
