The game downloads and installs on the console—not on your phone. For the request to start remotely, pair the app with the PS5 signed in to the same PlayStation account, enable the console’s internet connection in Rest Mode, and leave it in Rest Mode.
What you need before starting
- A PS5 and a PlayStation account that owns the game or has the required PlayStation Plus entitlement.
- The PlayStation App installed on your iOS or Android phone, signed in to the same account used on the console. Sony’s current US app page lists iOS 14.0 or later and Android 8.0 or later: PlayStation App.
- The PS5 paired with the app, with Stay Connected to the Internet enabled for Rest Mode.
- Enough available console storage for the game.
Pair the PlayStation App with your PS5
- Open the PlayStation App and sign in to your PlayStation account.
- Open Settings > Pair Console to App.
- Follow the prompts and select the PS5 that is signed in to the same account.
Pairing allows the app to start game downloads and manage PS5 storage. Sony’s PlayStation App support guide describes pairing and the app’s console features.
Allow downloads while the PS5 is in Rest Mode
On the PS5, enable Stay Connected to the Internet in the Rest Mode settings, then put the console into Rest Mode. Sony specifies that a paired PS5 must have this option switched on and be in Rest Mode for a remote download started from the app. See Sony’s PlayStation App support for the requirement.
Start a game download from the app
- In the PlayStation App, select Game Library at the bottom of the screen.
- Open Purchased and choose the game.
- Tap Download to Console, then select your PS5 if prompted.
The app sends the download request; the PS5 downloads and installs the game. Sony says the app can notify you when the download is complete. The same process can be used for eligible add-ons: open the game’s page, go to Add-Ons, choose the add-on, and tap Download to Console. - PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
What happens if the download does not start right away?
Check which stage is preventing the request from reaching the console:
- Account or pairing: Confirm the app and PS5 use the same PlayStation account and that the console is paired in Settings > Pair Console to App.
- Rest Mode connection: Make sure Stay Connected to the Internet is enabled and the PS5 is in Rest Mode. If the console is off or cannot connect in Rest Mode, it cannot begin the app-initiated remote download in the required state.
- Game entitlement: Check that the game is available to the account. A purchased game and a PlayStation Plus game have different entitlements. Monthly games can be downloaded remotely only while the account has the relevant entitlement and the game remains available. Sony explains access to Plus games in its PlayStation Plus games guide.
- Automatic-download setup: Sony’s download guide says content without automatic downloads set up begins downloading when the console is next turned on. If the request has not started, turn on the PS5 and check its downloads.
- Storage: If the console lacks space, use the app’s PS5 Storage view to review storage and delete games you no longer need. The app does not support moving or copying games.
Choose a download location and manage PS5 storage
The app’s PS5 Storage view can show console storage and connected USB storage, and lets you delete games to free space. If an M.2 SSD is installed and set as the default location for games and apps, the app can offer that SSD as the download location. Moving and copying games are not supported in the app, according to Sony’s feature guide.

Download a PlayStation Plus game remotely
If a game is included in a PlayStation Plus offer available to your account, you can start its download through the app as you would for another eligible game. Access depends on the game’s current availability and your membership entitlement; a Plus listing does not mean you own the game permanently.
