Each method supports a different part of the work: painting gives the artist direct control, photobashing builds on suitable source images, and 3D helps resolve spatial questions. Choose according to the desired output, available skills and materials, iteration needs, and rights—not as though one method replaces every use of image generation.
Choose a workflow by the job it needs to do
Concept art explores and communicates a visual design; it is not necessarily a finished, production-ready game asset. Adobe describes image generators as tools for exploring environments, characters, palettes, and textures before prototypes. Without them, those explorations can be made by hand, assembled from authorized visual material, or developed from 3D reference. Adobe’s guide is vendor material, not an independent comparison of workflows.

These distinctions are practical rather than a ranking. A workflow that helps settle an environment’s perspective may not be the best way to design an expressive character, and a compelling concept image does not by itself supply a game-ready model, texture, or other production asset. A review of graphical game-asset creation treats methods as varying across asset types, while a game-art thesis discusses workflows broadly; neither establishes a single best pipeline or measured time savings.
Digital painting and sketching: make the image directly
In a direct-painting workflow, the artist draws and paints the concept in graphics software, refining the design in the same working image. It is the clearest artist-authored option and avoids dependence on a stock-photo source library. It does, however, put the drawing, design, and rendering work on the artist.

Krita as a documented option
Krita describes itself as free, open-source digital painting software and lists features including layers, drawing assistants, and stabilizers. Krita’s FAQ says artists and studios may use it commercially, including for commercial games. Check Krita’s current terms and product information when choosing software; the FAQ dates to 2012, while its landing page surfaced version 5.3.3 at the time these details were checked.
Input devices are optional equipment
You can draw with a mouse or another supported input method, but a graphics tablet with stylus is an optional physical tool for drawing—not a replacement for the software and not a requirement. Krita’s 2012 FAQ describes compatibility with Wacom, Huion, and other UC-Logic-based tablets when configured properly. Treat that as dated compatibility guidance, not a complete current device list; check the tablet maker’s and software’s current support information before buying.

Photobashing: build a concept from authorized visual material
Photobashing combines photographs, 3D renders, or both, then uses compositing, repainting, and color grading to make them read as one designed image. It can be useful for grounded environmental surfaces and reference-rich scenes. The artist still has to make the result coherent: mismatched lighting, perspective, scale, or image quality can make a composite feel assembled rather than designed.
A workflow guide from Hailuo describes photobashing for game art; it is a commercial AI vendor’s material, so it supports the broad method rather than claims about its AI products. Its reference to licensed or in-house images does not define the rights attached to any particular image. Before using stock photos or asset-pack components, check the actual license for the intended commercial game, modifications, and any redistribution. Paying for an image or pack does not automatically establish permission for every downstream use.

- For stock or purchased assets, read the license and confirm that the specific intended uses are covered.
- Keep track of source material and its terms so the composite can be reviewed later.
- Expect substantial artist refinement; a collection of source images is not a finished concept by itself.
3D block-ins and kitbashing: solve spatial questions first
A 3D block-in uses simple forms to establish composition, perspective, scale, or lighting. Kitbashing assembles existing pieces into a scene or design. The result can be painted over for a concept image or used as visual reference for later work. This is especially relevant when the question is how forms occupy space or how a scene reads from a camera angle.
Keep the output’s role clear: a block-in or kitbash used as reference is not automatically a production-ready game asset. The available evidence supports these methods as options within a range of asset-creation approaches, but does not establish a specific software pipeline or prove that either method is faster. Choose software and asset sources based on the team’s existing skills and the project’s requirements rather than assuming one prescribed toolchain.

How to choose and combine the approaches
Start with the uncertainty you need to resolve. If the main task is designing the image itself, paint or sketch directly. If the task benefits from photographic surface detail, photobash with authorized source material and repaint the composite. If perspective, scale, or lighting is the sticking point, establish the space in 3D and use it as a base or reference. A project can combine these methods—for example, using a 3D block-in for composition and then painting the final concept—without treating any intermediate image as a completed asset.
- Need direct authorship and design control? Start with sketching or painting.
- Have suitable source images and a rights-cleared use? Consider photobashing, with time for integration and repainting.
- Need to test space, camera, or lighting? Try a simple 3D block-in or kitbash, then decide whether to paint over it or use it as reference.
- Need a production asset rather than a concept? Define the required deliverable separately; a concept workflow does not by itself produce a game-ready asset.
