Treat tier lists as version-specific guidance: enemy elements, character roles and your comfort with a moveset can matter more in a particular fight.
Which starting character should you build first?
Your starting party is Rio, Lucas and Aru. Rio uses a sword, Lucas a lance and Aru a bow; the party has one main character and two sub-characters, and you can switch characters during real-time combat. Pocket Gamer’s beginner guide explains the party and combat basics.
Aru: a strong early ranged pick
The Pocket Gamer tier guide places Aru in S tier in its version 6.1.0 snapshot, updated October 5, 2026. It describes her as an early-available ranged character with strong stats. If you like ranged combat, she is a sound first investment. That tier placement is the publisher’s evaluation, not an official ranking. See the version 6.1.0 Metria tier list.
Rio: an approachable character to learn with
The same guide also places Rio in S tier and describes him as intuitive and easy to learn. He is a sensible core character if you prefer a straightforward sword user, even though the guide does not praise his stats as highly as some alternatives.

Lucas: keep him available as your third option
Lucas is the starting lance user. The tier guide calls him a solid third pick but rates his moveset below some alternatives. Keep him in your rotation when you want his weapon or role rather than spending resources on him simply because he is part of the initial party.
How should you choose between characters?
A general tier placement is only one input. When deciding where to spend resources, use the needs of the fight and the characters you actually have.

- Availability: Build someone you can use now rather than holding resources for a character you do not own. Characters obtained outside the story may be playable before they appear in the story, according to the beginner guide.
- Enemy element: Check the enemy’s weakness and your character’s element. The guides describe elemental advantages and opposing damage relationships, so a matchup can make a character more useful than a broad ranking suggests.
- Role and range: Consider whether the fight calls for ranged damage, melee pressure, durability or support-like utility. Aru and Shash are ranged; the tier guide says Shash’s debuffs can help a melee character after you switch.
- Handling: If you are still learning combat, Rio’s described ease of use may be more valuable than a small subjective difference in tier placement.
Should you invest in characters beyond the starting party?
Shash is an S-tier option in the October 5, 2026 list. The guide describes her as a ranged fighter whose debuffs can support a melee character after switching. Consider her if you acquire her and that utility suits your team.
Popodero is rated A tier in the same snapshot. The guide describes him as emphasizing damage and durability over speed, and says he appears later unless obtained through gacha. He may suit a durable playstyle, but there is no need to delay building your starting characters while waiting for him.

The list reflects its publisher’s assessment and can change as characters are released. Its October 5, 2026 update is labeled version 6.1.0 and includes Green Hammer Knight Popodero and Purple Piercer Knight Zescole. Check the current list and your installed game version before relying on a placement.

The beginner guide reports that most experience goes to the character used to defeat enemies, with some rewards shared across the party. Its dated advice suggests dealing most of the damage with one character, then switching to the character you want to level for the finishing blow. Because game behavior can change, check that this still works in your version before building a leveling routine around it.

For ordinary progression, choose a small group to use regularly instead of spreading effort across every character you own. Add or raise another character when an element matchup or role gives you a clear reason to do so.
Basic leveling and later awakening systems are separate investment decisions. Asobimo’s Limit Break notice describes further enhancement for eligible characters, including eligibility and awakening changes. Check the current in-game requirements and costs before committing scarce resources; the notice does not make Limit Break an automatic early-game priority.

The ranking-specific recommendations above refer to Pocket Gamer’s tier list updated October 5, 2026, labeled version 6.1.0. Character availability and relative usefulness can shift with game updates, so use the in-game roster and current notices when making costly or endgame decisions. Asobimo’s official METRIA website lists the game as free to play and available for iOS, Android and Windows.
