The Steam Deck has quick suspend and resume built into SteamOS: press the power button to put a game and the system to sleep, then press it again to wake the Deck and return to where you left off. Valve describes this as the intended experience, not a guarantee that every game or online session will resume identically.
How quick resume works on Steam Deck
Valve calls the feature “quick suspend / resume.” Pressing the power button suspends the game and puts the Steam Deck into sleep mode; pressing the button again wakes it. Valve says the Deck returns you “right where you left off.” You can read Valve’s description on the Steam Deck product page and its SteamOS page.
This is a suspend-and-wake feature, not a promise that the game will remain active in the background. The official descriptions do not give a measured wake time or a fixed duration for how long a suspended session is retained.
Will every game and online session resume the same way?
Not necessarily. Valve describes the system-level behavior, but does not promise uniform results for every title, saved state, or live connection. A game may handle a lost online connection differently from a single-player game, so treat quick resume as a convenient return to play rather than a substitute for saving progress or confirming an online match remains connected.

Are there known sleep-and-resume issues?
Valve’s release notes document specific fixes, which show that behavior can be affected by software and hardware conditions. SteamOS 3.7.24, released to all users on May 10, 2026, included a change intended to reduce the chance of audio instability after resuming from suspend. A SteamOS 3.8.28 Beta note dated September 22, 2026 listed a fix for degraded game performance after sleep/resume on systems with AMD discrete GPUs. These are targeted changes, not evidence that all Decks or games have resume problems. See Valve’s Steam Deck news and update notes and the news page carrying the September 2026 beta notes.

No accessory is described as necessary for quick resume. Valve presents suspend and resume as a SteamOS feature built into the Steam Deck; its product page does not say a dock, microSD card, or other accessory enables it.
