The opening hours are better approached as a lesson in defensive resource management and experimentation: learn when to attack, keep stamina available for defense or dodging, try the weapon styles, and explore for gear, Relics, and story clues.
How combat works: manage defense, not attack stamina
Project Cloud Games describes the combat philosophy as “freedom in attack, intensity in survival.” Attacks do not spend stamina; defensive actions such as dodging and defense do. That means you can attack without budgeting stamina for each swing, but you still need to preserve the resource that helps you survive. The developer explains this system in its PlayStation Blog feature.
For a beginner, the practical takeaway is to observe an enemy before committing to a long attack sequence. Leave room to dodge or defend when a threat appears rather than assuming you can always react after spending stamina. Exact stamina values, parry windows, and punish timings are not established in the cited material, so learn those through the game’s own encounters instead of relying on a fixed timing rule.
Skills and high-power magic have different resource descriptions
The developer says skills operate on cooldowns without resource costs. Steam’s store description separately says high-power magic uses a cooldown and a dedicated meter. These descriptions distinguish skills from high-power magic; they do not establish that every ability follows one shared resource rule. Check the in-game description of a specific ability before building a strategy around its cost.

Choose a weapon style by its rhythm
The game features five weapon styles: Sword & Shield, Battle Staff, Daggers, Two-Handed Weapons, and Longsword. Project Cloud Games says the styles have distinct combat rhythms and that each has twelve exclusive skill trees. Neither the developer nor Steam provides enough comparative detail to rank them as best or easiest. The complete list and framing appear in the developer’s feature and the Steam listing.
Rather than committing to a style based on a tier list, try the available options and pay attention to whether their pace and defensive demands suit you. A style that feels comfortable to control is a more useful starting point than a supposed universal winner.

Progression: build a character without conventional levels
The Relic: First Guardian does not use character levels, according to the developer. Growth instead comes from Relics (also called runes in some descriptions), equipment, and skill choices. Meridiem’s product page also describes runes, items, crafting, and completing dungeons or defeating bosses as parts of strengthening the character and expanding the world.
What to pay attention to
- Relics: Project Cloud Games says Relics offer more than 70 passive effects. These can reshape skill behavior, combat tempo, and weapon styles, making them a major part of how a build feels.
- Equipment: The developer says each weapon and armor piece exists only once and has its own story, rather than being one of many near-identical drops. Consider equipment as a meaningful choice, not simply an item-level upgrade ladder.
- Skills: Each of the five weapon styles has twelve exclusive skill trees, so skill choices are tied to the style you use.
- Crafting and exploration: Meridiem lists crafting among the ways to strengthen a character; Steam highlights dungeons and artifacts as part of exploring the world.
These systems make exploration and configuration more relevant than grinding experience or allocating conventional stat points. Exact upgrade costs, respec rules, and an optimal build have not been established in the cited sources.

Explore off the main route for world and story
Steam describes a semi-open, interconnected world with ruins, hidden dungeons, artifacts, secret encounters, and lost lore. Project Cloud Games emphasizes environmental storytelling: damaged walls and personal objects can preserve traces of people who lived in the world. Exploring an optional-looking space may therefore contribute to both discovery and the game’s story, not just combat progression.
The developer frames the player less as a conventional legendary hero and more as a keeper of stories restoring memory. Creative Director Inhyuk Park described the intended tone as “an old folktale told by a grandfather to a child; gentle, lingering, and quietly profound.” That framing makes it worth looking at the surroundings and objects you encounter, but no particular secret route or required collectible is established here.

What to expect from bosses
Bosses are presented as distinct encounters with story context, but the available descriptions do not provide verified boss-by-boss tactics. The developer’s 2025 feature says there are more than 70 bosses; Steam’s listing describes up to 80 mythic encounters. These are differently qualified figures, so neither should be treated as a single settled exact count.
For early encounters, apply the established combat fundamentals: watch the enemy, avoid exhausting your defensive stamina, and use a weapon style and skill setup that you can control. Specific parry windows, boss weaknesses, and recommended attack sequences are not confirmed by these sources.
