The PlayStation Portal update fans are hearing about is a software change, not a new hardware model. Sony’s currently listed system software version 7.1.7 sets the Portal to charge to 80% by default, a change Sony says is intended to support long-term battery health. Owners can adjust the limit in Settings > System > Battery.
What changes in PlayStation Portal update 7.1.7?
Sony’s release notes say version 7.1.7 changes how the Portal charges. After updating, the default charge limit is 80%. Sony explains that the change is intended to support the device’s long-term battery health; the notes do not quantify any effect on battery lifespan. The currently listed version appears on Sony’s Singapore Portal system software page, which does not state a release date.
This is a software update to the existing PlayStation Portal Remote Player, not an announcement of a hardware revision. Sony’s notes also list improvements to system software performance and stability, and to messages and usability on some screens, without identifying particular fixes or detailing the changes.

- Open Settings > System > Battery.
- Change the charge limit to the setting you want.
Sony warns that selecting a limit above 80% might affect battery performance and overall stability, reducing long-term battery health. The company does not specify the size of any effect, so treat the warning as a tradeoff rather than a quantified battery-life prediction.

- From the top-right of the screen, swipe left to open the Quick Menu.
- Go to Settings > System > System Software.
- Select Update System Software to check for and install an available update.
- To see the installed version, open Settings > System > System Software > Device Information.
Follow Sony’s official update instructions and install only official update data. The instructions are on Sony’s Canadian Portal system software page.

The 80% default is the change associated with version 7.1.7. Sony’s update history lists 1080p High Quality as a feature added in version 7.0.0, alongside QR-code sign-in and troubleshooting tips; those are earlier changes, not additions in 7.1.7.

Sony’s March 17, 2026 PlayStation Blog announcement covered the earlier 1080p High Quality mode and user-experience refinements. In that blog material, Sony reported a 162% increase in monthly cloud-streaming users between January 2025 and January 2026, and said more than 50% of PS Portal users subscribed to PlayStation Plus Premium. These are company-reported figures about cloud streaming, not measurements of the 7.1.7 charging change. Sony’s notes say cloud streaming is available to PlayStation Plus Premium members; that subscription is not stated as a requirement for changing the charge limit.
