Xbox CEO Asha Sharma reportedly told Microsoft gaming staff that Gen-10 is moving toward a family of devices, with a “great console first.” The remarks, reported by Windows Central from an internal town-hall transcript, do not confirm a handheld or name any other device. Separately, Xbox has publicly announced Project Helix, its next-generation console designed for Xbox and PC games.
What did the Xbox CEO reportedly say?
In a report updated October 6, 2026, Windows Central said it obtained and verified an internal Xbox town-hall transcript. In those reported remarks, Sharma said: “We are moving to a family of devices for Gen-10. There is not one device that fits all. We will certainly have a great console first, but we also know that many players will be on the go. There are some things that we are the best in the world to manufacture, and there are other things that will we partner on.” She added that Xbox would share more as its plans develop.
This is a reported statement to employees, not a public product announcement. It signals that Xbox is considering more than one kind of Gen-10 hardware and a mix of in-house manufacturing and partnerships. The transcript report does not identify the devices, partners, specifications, prices, or consumer release dates.
What is confirmed about Project Helix?
Xbox has officially announced Project Helix as its next-generation first-party console. The company says it is designed to play Xbox console and PC games and uses a custom AMD system-on-chip. Xbox also describes Helix as being co-designed for next-generation DirectX and FSR. These are Xbox’s stated design goals; the cited announcement does not provide independently measured performance results. Details are in Xbox’s GDC announcement.

Xbox said it plans to ship alpha versions of the hardware to developers beginning in 2027. That is a development milestone, not a retail launch window or a preorder date. No consumer release timing is established in the cited announcements.
Does this mean Xbox is making a handheld?
No handheld has been confirmed in the cited statements. Sharma’s reported reference to players who “will be on the go” makes portable play part of the conversation, but it does not establish that Xbox will sell an Xbox-branded handheld. Nor does the report say whether any possible portable device would be made by Xbox or a partner.

The family idea is not entirely new: in an August Gamescom interview, Sharma described a “great family of devices for Helix” while discussing performance, affordability, and efficiency as hardware costs rise. That interview adds context, but it still does not provide a product list. See the DayOne interview transcript.
How does a device family fit Xbox’s strategy?
Xbox’s public strategy keeps console at the center while extending access across PC, mobile, and cloud. Its April strategy memo says, “Console is at the foundation, delivering a premium experience, and cloud brings that experience to any device.” It names hardware, content, experience, and services as priorities, including stabilizing Gen-9 and delivering Project Helix. That makes a broader hardware family consistent with the company’s cross-device direction, but it does not confirm what any additional Gen-10 products will be. Read Xbox’s strategy memo.

Component availability and cost are also part of the business context. In June, Sharma said storage-component prices had risen sharply and Xbox could not make as many consoles as players wanted to buy. She described a need for a new hardware business model and partnerships while reaffirming commitment to Helix. Xbox has not publicly connected those constraints to any particular partner-made Gen-10 device. The comments appear in her June Xbox update.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What remains unknown?
- The complete Gen-10 device lineup and whether it includes a handheld.
- Which products Xbox will manufacture itself and which, if any, partners will make.
- Specifications, prices, and consumer availability dates for Helix or any additional device.
- Whether Gen-10 hardware will support particular existing games or accessories beyond the broad Xbox and PC game design goal stated for Helix.
Until Xbox announces those details, the clearest distinction is between the reported direction—multiple devices, a console first, and some partnerships—and the confirmed product: Project Helix, a next-generation console with alpha hardware planned for developers beginning in 2027.
