His screen work also spans action films, crime drama, television and Swedish productions; other prominent roles include the Marquis in John Wick: Chapter 4 and Count Orlok in Robert Eggers’s Nosferatu.
Who is Bill Skarsgård?
Skarsgård was born and raised in Stockholm, Sweden, and works in both Swedish and English. He began acting as a child and comes from a family with several actors, including his father, Stellan Skarsgård, and brothers Alexander and Gustaf. That background is part of his biography, but his own career ranges well beyond the family connection. Esquire’s 2024 profile and his Agentfirman CV document his career and credits.
Why is Bill Skarsgård known for horror?
Pennywise in It and It Chapter Two
Skarsgård’s breakout international role was Pennywise the Dancing Clown in It (2017) and It Chapter Two (2019). The first film is a screen adaptation of Stephen King’s 1986 horror novel. Pennywise is a predatory, shape-shifting figure, and the part demanded a striking shift from Skarsgård’s more boyish screen presence.
It director Andy Muschietti described that transformation to Esquire: “One second he can act all cute, and then the next, there’s something ancestral and dark that just appears. His ability to transform is mind-blowing to me.” The quote points to a central quality of the performance: menace can emerge abruptly from a disarming surface.

In Robert Eggers’s Nosferatu, Skarsgård plays Count Orlok, the vampire at the center of the gothic horror film. Focus Features lists the film’s U.S. release date as December 25, 2024, and identifies Eggers as its writer and director. The role draws on a different monster tradition from Pennywise: Orlok is a vampire tied to the legacy of the 1922 silent film, while Pennywise comes from King’s modern novel.
Both characters are iconic monsters, but their stories and the films’ source traditions differ. That contrast makes the parts useful examples of Skarsgård’s ability to inhabit distinct forms of horror, not evidence that the characters or performances are interchangeable.

What connects his roles?
Rather than fitting into one genre, Skarsgård often plays characters whose presence carries an element of uncertainty. Esquire’s 2024 profile emphasizes that quality in roles including Pennywise, the Marquis and Willard Russell. Sam Levinson, creator of Euphoria and director of Assassination Nation, told Esquire: “His charm pulls you in, but there’s always an unpredictability lurking under the surface.”
That observation offers one way to compare his work without trying to rank every performance: look at the genre, the character’s function in the story and the transformation the role asks of him.
