PvE and PvP reward different strengths, and story, Hunts, Abyss, Arena, and real-time PvP each place their own demands on a team. Use a ranking for the exact mode you care about, and treat its tiers as dated editorial guidance—not a universal measure of a hero’s value.
Why the same hero can rank differently by mode
A tier list evaluates heroes against a particular goal. A hero who helps a team clear ordinary enemies quickly may not offer the control or debuffs that an Arena strategy needs. Conversely, a hero prized for disrupting an opponent may not be the best fit for a PvE team built around reliable clears.
Pocket Gamer’s guide illustrates the contrast at a broad level: story PvE values clear speed and survival, while Arena PvP calls for control and debuffs. Those are useful starting points, not fixed rules for every encounter, team, or account. A specific boss or strategy can change what matters most.
“PvE” and “PvP” each contain different activities
A mode label alone may be too broad to choose a useful ranking. The Epic Seven Tier List Hub separates PvE into story, Hunt, and Abyss rankings, and breaks PvP out into Arena, RTA, and The Call of Chaos. A hero’s usefulness in one of these activities does not automatically establish its place in another.

PvP is not one uniform test, either. The Epic Seven Wiki’s PvP Fundamentals guide, updated September 12, 2026, describes several overlapping modes with different rules. When consulting a PvP ranking, check whether it covers the specific mode you intend to play rather than assuming its recommendations transfer unchanged.
How to interpret a tier-list ranking
Rankings are judgments made for a stated purpose, not an official game-wide rating. Epic7DB’s tier-list page describes its rankings as reflecting top-ranked player opinions and the publisher’s experience. That explains the list’s editorial basis; it does not make the rankings an endorsement or rating from Smilegate.

- Players: 2-4 / Ages: 14+ / Time: 30+ minutes
When two lists disagree, compare the context behind their placements rather than treating one letter grade as definitive. The key questions are:
- Which activity? Check whether each list is for story, Hunt, Abyss, Arena, RTA, or The Call of Chaos.
- What role? Consider what the hero contributes to the team and whether that contribution fits your intended approach.
- What assumptions? Look for stated expectations about gear or team composition. Do not assume two lists share the same assumptions if they do not say so.
- What method? Find out whether the publisher explains how it arrived at its placements. Different publishers do not necessarily use a common scoring system.
- How current? Check the list’s update date and whether it accounts for balance changes.
Why rankings change over time
A tier list is a snapshot, not a permanent verdict. The Epic Seven Tier List Hub, updated September 1, 2026, distinguishes rankings by activity and notes that placements can move after balance changes. A ranking that was useful when published may no longer reflect the current state of the game, so check its date before using it to make a decision.

How to use a tier list when choosing heroes
- Name the goal. Decide what you want to clear or compete in before looking up heroes.
- Find a list for that activity. Prefer a mode-specific ranking over a broad PvE or PvP list when one is available.
- Read the reasoning. Check what the placement says about the hero’s role and the conditions behind the rating.
- Compare it with your team and task. A rank can help identify candidates, but it cannot guarantee a result for every account or composition.
- Check the date. Revisit the ranking after balance changes or when the list is updated.
Is there one tier list for every mode?
A broad list can be a starting point, but it cannot capture every mode’s demands. Even within PvE or PvP, activities ask different things of a team, so the more useful question is whether a ranking matches the content you want to play.

Start with the PvE activity you want to progress in and consult a ranking or guide for that content. Treat its placements as a shortlist, then consider the hero’s described role and how it fits the team you can actually field. A general “best heroes” ranking cannot establish which choice is best for every new account.
