League of Legends Worlds 2026 begins with a four-team, best-of-five double-elimination Play-In. Its winner joins 15 directly qualified teams in a 16-team Swiss Stage, where teams qualify for the Knockout Stage with three wins or are eliminated after three losses. Eight teams reach the best-of-five, single-elimination Knockout Stage.
How the Worlds 2026 format works
Riot says 19 teams qualify for Worlds 2026: four start in the Play-In, and the Play-In winner takes the final place in the 16-team Swiss field. Eight Swiss teams advance to Knockouts. The event runs October 15 to November 14, 2026, according to Riot’s Worlds 2026 Primer and event update.
| Stage | Entrants | Match format | How teams advance or are eliminated | Does a loss end the tournament? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Play-In | 4 | Best-of-five | One team wins the double-elimination bracket and joins Swiss | No; a team can lose once and remain in the bracket |
| Swiss Stage | 16 | Best-of-one and best-of-three | Three match wins qualify; three losses eliminate | No, until a team reaches three losses |
| Knockout Stage | 8 | Best-of-five | Win each round to reach the final and become champion | Yes; it is single elimination |
The format and match details are set out in Riot’s 2026 Primer and 2026 official rules.
Play-In: four teams compete for one Swiss place
The Play-In is a best-of-five double-elimination bracket: losing once does not automatically end a team’s run. Four teams compete for a single place in Swiss. Riot’s primer lists a CBLOL team, Karmine Corp, Cloud9, and MVK among the four entrants. The opening matchups are set by a fully random draw after the CBLOL Finals on October 10, 2026.

Swiss Stage: three wins to qualify, three losses to go out
The 16-team Swiss Stage lasts up to five rounds. Teams are grouped by their win-loss record after each round: reaching three match wins earns a place in Knockouts, while reaching three losses means elimination. Riot’s primer identifies Swiss matches as best-of-one or best-of-three; the source does not specify a fixed best-of-one/best-of-three sequence for every round.

How the opening Swiss draw works
Before Round 1, Riot places teams into four draw tiers. Tier 1 faces Tier 4, and Tier 2 faces Tier 3. Teams from the same region cannot meet in the opening round.
| Tier | Teams listed by Riot |
|---|---|
| Tier 1 | GEN, AL, TLAW, G2 |
| Tier 2 | First CBLOL seed, TSW, HLE, BLG |
| Tier 3 | LYON, MKOI, T1, TES |
| Tier 4 | CFO, IG, DK, Play-In winner |
The primer uses a placeholder for the first CBLOL seed because it had not named that team in the tier list. The tiers set the Round 1 pairing pattern; they are not described as a ranking that determines every later matchup.

How Rounds 2–5 are paired
From Round 2 onward, teams are randomly paired with opponents who have the same record. Teams cannot face a repeat opponent, but same-region matchups are allowed from Round 2. The Play-In draw and Swiss draw are separate processes: the former is fully random, while the latter uses tiers for its opening round and records for later rounds. Riot details both in its Worlds 2026 Primer.
Knockouts: eight teams, single elimination
The eight Swiss qualifiers enter a best-of-five, single-elimination bracket. Lose a match and the team is out. For the quarterfinal draw, Riot says the two teams that went 3–0 in Swiss are randomly paired against two of the four teams that went 3–2. The four remaining qualifiers are randomly drawn into the other two quarterfinals.

Riot describes the Swiss opening categories as draw tiers and publishes their Round 1 pairing pattern. Those tiers should not be confused with a complete ranking that fixes all later opponents: after Round 1, the stated draw mechanism is random pairing within the same record, with no rematches.
