What Is Chromatic Aberration, and Why Do Games Use It?

Chromatic aberration is a camera-inspired color-fringing effect used in games for style or moment-specific cues. Its appearance and player controls vary by game.

Chromatic aberration is color fringing caused when an optical system does not bring different colors to the same point. Games can imitate that camera-lens artifact in post-processing, using it as a visual style or a cue for a moment such as an impact. Its strength and whether you can turn it off depend on the game.

What chromatic aberration looks like

In photography, chromatic aberration occurs when a lens fails to focus all colors at the same image point. It can show up as colored fringes along high-contrast boundaries, such as the edge between a dark object and a bright background. Unity’s 2019.3 manual describes fringes in colors such as red and blue or green and purple.

In a game, the effect is generally a post-processing treatment applied to the rendered image. Unity’s Post Processing 3.2.2 documentation describes separating red, green, and blue channels along image boundaries; Unreal Engine describes its effect as simulating color shifts associated with camera lenses. This is a rendering choice, not evidence of a defect in your display or eyesight.

Why games use it

It can make the image feel as though it is being viewed through a camera, or give a scene a deliberately stylized look. Unity’s documentation names camera impact and intoxication effects as examples of artistic uses. Those examples describe possible design choices, not a universal reason every game includes the effect.

How it looks depends on how strongly and where it is applied. Epic’s Fortnite documentation notes that the amount can produce blur around scene edges or across the entire scene. A subtle treatment may be limited to color fringing; a stronger one can make boundaries or more of the image look blurred.

What the settings change

Engine controls show how developers can tune the effect, but they do not guarantee that a finished game gives players the same controls.

  • QHD Resolution (2560 x 1440) has 1.7 times the pixel density of Full HD for incredibly detailed pinsharp images
  • HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
  • The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
  • AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
  • Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort
  • Strength: A higher amount can make the color separation more pronounced and, as Epic’s Fortnite documentation explains, may blur scene edges or the whole scene.
  • Extent: Unreal Engine documents a Start Offset control that determines where in the framebuffer the effect begins, allowing developers to adjust its reach.
  • Implementation: Unity’s Post Processing package 3.2.2 documents a faster variant of its effect. This is an engine implementation detail, not a promise of a particular performance gain in every game.

For implementation details, see Epic’s Unreal Engine post-process documentation, its Fortnite chromatic aberration documentation, and Unity’s Post Processing 3.2.2 documentation.

Can you turn it off?

Check the specific game’s graphics, video, or post-processing settings for a chromatic aberration option. Whether a player-facing toggle exists is title-specific: engine documentation about developer controls does not establish that every game exposes them. If the setting is absent, the cited engine documentation does not establish a universal workaround.
