Legendary Edition leaves that mode out, changes how Galactic Readiness is calculated, and uses the Extended Cut finale by default. It is a trilogy collection, not a remaster you can buy as a standalone ME3 campaign.
At a glance: the main differences
| What you’re comparing | Original Mass Effect 3 | Mass Effect Legendary Edition |
|---|---|---|
| Scope | Standalone Mass Effect 3 release. | Single-player versions of all three trilogy games, with more than 40 DLC packs across the collection. EA’s Legendary Edition page describes this as collection-wide content. |
| Multiplayer | Includes multiplayer menus and cooperative matchmaking, as documented in the original PC manual. | Multiplayer is not included; the collection’s included content is single-player. BioWare’s gameplay-calibration notes also confirm readiness no longer uses multiplayer as an external input. |
| Presentation | Original presentation and technical features. | Trilogy-wide remastering of models, textures, effects, lighting, and cinematics, plus other collection-wide technical updates. EA’s launch announcement details the remaster. |
| Finale and Galactic Readiness | Extended Cut is established ME3 DLC; the original release’s readiness system could be affected by external multiplayer and the old companion app. | Extended Cut is the default finale. Readiness no longer receives input from multiplayer or the old app, and BioWare says fully preparing the final fight is harder than with the Extended Cut readiness rebalance. |

What Legendary Edition adds to ME3
Legendary Edition packages the trilogy’s single-player base content and more than 40 DLC packs in one collection. That count is for all three games together, not ME3 alone. The collection includes the ME3 single-player expansions and add-ons, alongside content for the first two games; it is the more convenient choice if you want the trilogy in one purchase. EA’s collection description lists its contents.

This does not mean the ME3 story expansions were exclusive to Legendary Edition. BioWare’s anniversary post names From Ashes, Leviathan, Omega, Citadel, and Extended Cut as ME3 single-player DLC, and EA’s Mass Effect 3 (2012) page says that edition includes previously released DLC. The distinction is scope: Legendary Edition bundles the trilogy’s single-player content, while the original listing is for ME3 by itself. BioWare’s ME3 anniversary post and EA’s ME3 page provide those details.
Multiplayer: the decisive difference
The original ME3 has a cooperative multiplayer mode. Its PC manual documents quick match, creating a match, character selection, leaderboards, and public or private co-op sessions. Legendary Edition does not include multiplayer: EA describes its content as single-player, and the collection does not restore that original mode.

That distinction also affects the campaign’s Galactic Readiness system. BioWare says, “Galactic Readiness is no longer impacted by external factors that aren’t part of the collection, like multiplayer or the old companion app for ME3.” In Legendary Edition, readiness comes from content and choices within the trilogy collection rather than those outside services. BioWare’s calibration notes explain the change.
The original release’s inclusion of multiplayer does not establish that matchmaking is currently available. Server and platform conditions can change, so check the service status for your platform before buying the original solely to play online.

How the ending and war readiness work in Legendary Edition
Legendary Edition does not simply swap the original ending for a newly invented one. The Extended Cut is established Mass Effect 3 DLC, and BioWare says it is the collection’s default finale. If you played the original game after that DLC was released, the broad ending experience will not be an entirely new version just because you moved to Legendary Edition.
The readiness balance is different. BioWare says fully preparing for the final fight is harder than it was in ME3 with the Extended Cut readiness rebalance. If you play only ME3, it says you will need to pursue nearly every available option to qualify for an ending without massive galactic losses. Carrying choices forward from Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2 is its most reliable route to better final-act outcomes. These are BioWare’s stated guidance, not a guarantee of a particular ending. The official calibration article covers the finale and readiness rules.

Graphics and technical changes
Legendary Edition upgrades presentation across the trilogy rather than rebuilding ME3 alone. EA says the remaster updates character models and tens of thousands of textures, alongside shaders, visual effects, lighting, dynamic shadows, volumetrics, depth of field, and pre-rendered cinematics. These changes make the collection’s presentation more current, but EA’s most extensive gameplay overhaul notes concern the first Mass Effect; do not mistake its Mako or combat changes for ME3 redesigns. EA’s announcement outlines the visual work.
Other listed improvements apply to the collection as a whole: remixed or enhanced audio, hundreds of fixes for legacy bugs, native PC controller support, 21:9 display support, and DirectX 11 compatibility. Legendary Edition also uses a unified launcher, shared subtitle and language settings, and integrated weapons and armor DLC progression. These are useful presentation and convenience updates, but they do not make ME3’s core campaign a substantially different game. EA’s collection announcement describes these features.

Quick Recap
Which version should you choose?
- Choose Legendary Edition if you want all three campaigns and their bundled single-player DLC, updated presentation, and a single collection. It is the clearest choice for a first playthrough of the trilogy.
- Look at the original ME3 release if its multiplayer mode is essential to you. Verify current online service availability on your intended platform before buying for that reason.
- Choose based on platform access if you already own one version or need a specific console or PC storefront. Check the current regional store listing: EA’s catalog can change.
