How Paragon, Renegade, and Reputation work
BioWare writer Patrick Weekes explained that Mass Effect 3’s Reputation score adds Paragon and Renegade scores together to determine Charm and Intimidate options. The game displays Paragon in blue and Renegade in red, alongside the broader Reputation meter. General reputation gains can increase that meter without changing the existing red-to-blue balance.

As the meter reaches progression checkpoints, additional dialogue options become available. BioWare’s explanation does not give a complete list of numeric thresholds or the point value of individual choices, so there is no reliable universal number to target from that source. If you are close to a checkpoint, optional missions and conversations may add enough reputation to reach it.
Do you need to stick to Paragon or Renegade?
No. BioWare explicitly says that mixing the two carries no dialogue-check penalty in Mass Effect 3: both colors count toward the same total used for Charm and Intimidate checks. You can choose the response that fits Shepard in a given scene without maintaining a pure alignment just to preserve access to those checks.

That does not make choices interchangeable. Individual decisions still shape scenes and relationships; the point is that the Reputation mechanic does not require one-color play for its special dialogue checks.
What the two approaches usually express

These are broad tendencies, not a simple good-versus-evil split. BioWare’s description stresses that even a Renegade Shepard is still trying to save the galaxy; the difference is often the means used to pursue that goal.

Where Reputation points come from
Not every gain comes from a major moral decision. BioWare says missions without a major choice can add general reputation, and that checking in with crew or helping refugees can provide small bonuses. These are possible contributions, not guarantees that a particular conversation will unlock a specific check.
When a desired dialogue option is unavailable, keep progressing the meter through missions and conversations rather than assuming you must reload and choose a different color. The developer recommends taking additional side missions when you are near a checkpoint.

Dialogue choices and interrupts
Dialogue responses and context-dependent actions let you decide how Shepard reacts, but color alone is not a universal guide to an interrupt’s consequences. BioWare’s general explanation of Reputation does not catalog every interrupt or establish that every blue action is harmless, or every red action good or bad. For a consequential scene, assess the specific choice rather than relying on its color as a promise about the outcome.

Do not treat the colors as direct good-ending and bad-ending routes. The Reputation total governs Charm and Intimidate dialogue checks; the ending reflects a wider set of decisions across the series. BioWare said the Extended Cut added cinematic sequences and epilogues to give more detail about the impact of player decisions, and that its scenes vary with choices made throughout the series. The studio described the DLC as expanding the original endings rather than fundamentally changing them.

There was also a separate Galaxy at War system discussed before release: in a 2011 interview, producer Jesse Houston described multiplayer participation as affecting Galactic Readiness and the end-game result, while saying the single-player campaign could be played on its own. That is historical context about the system at the time, not a statement about current online-service availability on any platform.
