Choose Sifu for a demanding, directed single-player kung-fu game built around a revenge story, group fights, and learning through repeated attempts. Choose Absolver if you want to design your own move deck and encounter other players in fights that can turn into PvP or PvE. They share a developer and a martial-arts focus, but they offer different kinds of play rather than one being a straight replacement for the other.
How do Sifu and Absolver differ?
| What matters | Sifu | Absolver |
|---|---|---|
| Play structure | Designed as a single-player game; PlayStation lists the PS4/PS5 version as one player with offline play enabled. PlayStation | Officially pitched around encounters with other players that can lead to PvP or PvE. That description does not establish current matchmaking activity. Absolver official site |
| Combat setup | Learn an offensive kit, unlock skills, and manage timing, defenses, Focus attacks, Structure, positioning, and environmental objects. Sifu combat overview | Build a personal style with the Combat Deck: choose a type, master a weapon, learn moves, and assemble combos. Absolver official site |
| Typical emphasis | Demanding encounters that include groups of enemies, target switching, and using the surroundings. | Tactical real-time duels and battles, with attacks, dodges, parries, and stance mastery. |
| Progression and replay | Death revives the protagonist at an aging cost. The free Arenas expansion adds five modes, nine locations, and 45 challenges; Sloclap marks its final content update as released September 7, 2023. Sifu official site | Learn moves and refine a Combat Deck. The official description does not establish present-day player counts or service conditions. |
| Story framing | A young kung-fu student hunts the assassins responsible for the murder of their family. PlayStation | The official pitch frames Prospects in a world where encounters and choices can steer play toward PvP or PvE; it does not establish a conventional campaign structure. |
Choose Sifu for a focused solo challenge
Sifu is the better fit if you want a clear solo framework: pursue a revenge story, face increasingly demanding fights, and improve by learning enemy patterns and refining your technique. Its combat asks you to manage Structure, choose between blocking, dodging, parrying, or avoiding attacks, and make use of Focus and the environment.

Death is part of that learning loop: the protagonist revives but grows older. The mechanic makes each attempt consequential, while unlockable abilities give you tools to develop as you practice. Sloclap’s community manager described the design as drawing on the studio’s martial-arts work in Absolver while focusing Sifu on a single-player experience inspired by kung-fu and martial-arts movies. What Sifu offers after the main challenge
For players who want more structured practice, Sloclap lists an Arenas expansion with five modes, nine dynamic locations, and 45 challenges. The official site marks the final content update as released September 7, 2023; it does not give a separate publication date for those figures. Sifu official site

- Your enemies don’t wait their turn, and they don’t broadcast their intent. Dodge, parry, strike, use combos and be like water making its way through captivating environments. Learn how to master your art, whether by fighting through the underbelly of a nightclub, scrambling through a refined gallery to avoid getting surrounded, or vertically navigating a towering office building.
- Careful positioning and clever use of the environment to your advantage are key to your survival. Use everything at your disposal: throwable objects, makeshift weapons, windows and ledges... The odds are stacked against you, and you will be offered no mercy.
- Kung Fu is mastery through practice, a path for both the body and the mind. Learn from your errors, unlock unique skills, and find the strength to master the devastating techniques of Pak Mei Kung Fu.
Choose Absolver to build your fighting style
Absolver is the more natural choice if the appeal is shaping how your character fights rather than following a fixed solo action-game structure. Its Combat Deck lets you learn moves and assemble combos around a chosen type and weapon. That makes experimentation with your own attack sequences central to the pitch.
The official game page also describes meeting other players, with encounters that may become PvP or PvE. This is a design distinction, not proof that matchmaking is currently active or that a particular platform has a healthy player population. If online play is essential to your decision, verify platform availability, service status, and matchmaking before buying. Absolver official site

Are their combat systems actually similar?
There is meaningful overlap: both are martial-arts games from Sloclap, and both emphasize tactical fighting rather than treating combat as a simple exchange of attacks. But the shared studio history should not be mistaken for identical mechanics or structure. Sloclap said it built on its experience with Absolver when developing Sifu, while shifting to a single-player action game. PlayStation
The practical difference is where each game puts player expression. In Sifu, you master the available combat tools and apply them to demanding encounters, often involving multiple enemies and environmental opportunities. In Absolver, you shape a custom Combat Deck and its combos, with player encounters part of the advertised experience. Sifu’s Structure system is described by Sloclap as representing the impact of breaking an opponent’s stance and ability to attack or defend; that is a distinct design explanation, not evidence that the two games share a combat system. Which should you play if you loved the other?
If you loved Sifu
Try Absolver if your favorite part was learning the timing and tactical rhythm of martial-arts fights, and you are curious about constructing a personal move set or facing other players. Do not expect Sifu’s solo revenge structure or aging-on-death progression to carry over.
If you loved Absolver
Try Sifu if you want another game from Sloclap centered on martial-arts combat, but prefer a directed single-player challenge, a revenge premise, and a practice loop based on mastering encounters. Its focus is not building a player-designed Combat Deck or PvP.

What to check before buying
- Online play is decisive: confirm Absolver’s current availability and matchmaking conditions on the platform you plan to use. Its official page describes PvP/PvE encounters but does not provide current service or population data.
- Platform or price is decisive: check the relevant store at the time of purchase. PlayStation’s listing is for its own platform and region, and its prices can change; it is not a cross-platform price comparison. PlayStation
- You want Sifu’s extra challenges: the official site lists the Arenas figures above and marks the last content update as September 7, 2023. Sifu official site

For a self-contained solo action game with a revenge story and a demanding learn-through-practice loop, pick Sifu.
