Mass Effect Legendary Edition is an appealing way to experience the trilogy, with all three single-player games and more than 40 DLC packs in one collection. Its remaster improves presentation and parts of the first game’s controls, but it does not make the combat or mission pacing feel consistently modern. Expect some dated gameplay, especially in Mass Effect 1.
What is included in Legendary Edition?
Electronic Arts describes the collection as the single-player base content from Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3, plus more than 40 DLC packs. The add-ons include story expansions, weapons, armor and promotional packs. EA also describes the collection as remastered and optimized for 4K Ultra HD. EA’s product page is the best place to check its current contents and store options.

The trilogy’s connected structure is a major part of the appeal: choices carry from one game to the next and can affect missions, relationships, battles and the galaxy’s fate, according to EA. That continuity gives the collection a stronger sense of a single long story than three unrelated RPGs.
How well does the remaster hold up?
Presentation and first-game improvements
In its 2021 announcement, EA listed updated character models and textures, visual and lighting improvements, interface updates and quality-of-life changes. For the first game, it also cited revised aiming, squad controls and behavior, Mako handling and cameras. These changes smooth the experience, particularly in the oldest entry, without rebuilding the trilogy from the ground up. EA’s announcement documents the launch-era changes.
#1 Best Overall
- One person is all that stands between humanity and the greatest threat it’s ever faced.
- Relive the legend of Commander Shepard in the highly acclaimed Mass Effect trilogy with the Mass Effect Legendary Edition.
- Includes single-player base content and over 40 DLC from Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2, and Mass Effect 3, including promo weapons, armors, and packs - remastered and optimized for 4k Ultra HD.
Combat and pacing
The remaster does not turn the series into a contemporary action game. MeriStation’s 2021 review describes the first game as having conspicuous rough edges and combat with limited depth, while praising the characters, moral choices, galaxy-wide conflicts and cinematic presentation. Those are the reviewer’s judgments, not guarantees of how every player will respond. If modern-feeling combat and tightly paced missions are your main priorities, the trilogy’s age is more likely to frustrate you than its remaster is to win you over.
How much time should you set aside?
This is a substantial collection, particularly if you plan to play optional content and expansions. Mac Walters, project director of Legendary Edition and lead writer of the original trilogy at BioWare, described it in EA’s 2021 announcement as containing “over 100 hours of gameplay.” MeriStation reviewer Sergi Blanch Motenai estimated more than 140 hours for someone seeking to experience all the content. These are attributed estimates, not a guaranteed completion time; your pace and how much optional material you pursue will change the total.

Where can you play it?
EA’s support page lists PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC through the EA app or Steam. EA’s launch announcement also described forward compatibility on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Because compatibility and store availability can depend on region and storefront, check the listing for the platform and country where you intend to play before buying. EA’s support page provides the platform details.
Who should play it today?
- Play it if companion characters, consequential decisions and a connected science-fiction story matter more to you than uniformly modern combat.
- Consider your tolerance for older gameplay if dated controls, rough edges or slower sections tend to put you off. The remaster eases some of those issues, most notably in the first game, but does not remove them.
- Check the time commitment if you want to see most of the trilogy and its add-on content; estimates vary with play style and optional activities.
- Check your platform’s current listing before purchase, especially if you are relying on compatibility with a newer console or a specific regional storefront.
MeriStation rated the collection 8.5/10 in its 2021 review. That score reflects one publication’s assessment at launch; the more useful question for a new player is whether the story and characters outweigh the older gameplay for you.

Verdict
Mass Effect Legendary Edition remains worth playing for readers who want a long, character-focused space RPG trilogy and value seeing decisions ripple through a shared story. It is less convincing as a pick for players seeking consistently fresh combat or brisk pacing. The remaster improves how the original games look and feel, but the first entry still shows its age.
