Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor most first-time players, play the main Metal Gear games in release order, then play Death Stranding followed by Death Stranding 2: On the Beach. The two series are separate paths: you do not need to finish Metal Gear before starting Death Stranding.
Choose a series first
| Series | What to expect | Suggested order |
|---|---|---|
| Metal Gear | A long-running stealth-action series with a story told across multiple entries. | Release order for a first playthrough. |
| Death Stranding | A separate series that begins with Death Stranding. | Death Stranding, then Death Stranding 2: On the Beach. |
Kojima Productions identifies Death Stranding as the studio’s first developed game. The official history documents its releases and the sequel, but does not establish a shared story continuity with Metal Gear or prescribe an order for playing Kojima’s games. Treating them as separate series is the practical way to choose where to begin. Kojima Productions’ studio history
Play the main Metal Gear games in release order
If you want to follow the main Metal Gear story, start with the earliest main-series release available to you and continue in release order. That approach lets you encounter the games’ mechanics and story revelations in the sequence players originally did. It is an editorial recommendation for newcomers, not an official order published by Kojima Productions or Konami.
Release order and in-universe chronological order are different. A chronological list rearranges games according to when their events occur; it is not the default recommendation here. This guide focuses on a practical starter path rather than an exhaustive list of every game Hideo Kojima directed, wrote, produced, or otherwise contributed to.

Play Death Stranding before its sequel
- Play Death Stranding.
- Continue with Death Stranding 2: On the Beach.
Kojima Productions records the first game’s PS4 launch on November 8, 2019, followed by its PC release in July 2020, the PS5 Director’s Cut in September 2021, and the PC Director’s Cut in March 2022. The studio records Death Stranding 2: On the Beach launching on PS5 in June 2025 and on PC in March 2026. Where to start buying the Metal Gear games
Konami’s U.S. games catalog currently lists METAL GEAR SOLID: MASTER COLLECTION Vol.1 for PS4, PC, Nintendo Switch, Steam, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. The listing establishes that the product is available in those catalog categories; it is not, by itself, a verified complete breakdown of the collection’s contents. Before buying, check the exact title list, edition, region, and platform compatibility on the store page for your system. Konami’s U.S. games catalog

Konami also lists METAL GEAR SOLID Δ: SNAKE EATER among its current products. A remake or expanded edition can be an alternative way to play a particular entry, but it does not change the recommended release-order path for someone following the series across its original releases. Check the product’s platform and edition details before purchasing.

This is a focused starting guide, not a complete Kojima gameography. It leaves out side projects, spin-offs, remakes, expanded editions, and games where his role may have varied. In particular, it does not place Zone of the Enders, Snatcher, or Policenauts into a definitive career-wide order. The official pages cited here document studio milestones and current product listings, not a complete list of Kojima’s credits or a canonical play sequence.
