To check a Nintendo Switch 2 game’s version, highlight the game on the HOME Menu without opening it, press + or −, and read the number beneath the software title. This is the game’s version—not the console’s system menu version.
Find a game’s version on Switch 2
- Go to the HOME Menu.
- Highlight the game or application you want to check. Do not start it.
- Press the controller’s + or − button to open the software menu.
- Read the version number displayed under the software title. Nintendo confirms this is where the current version appears in its Switch 2 software update instructions.
Game version and system version are different
The number beneath a game’s title identifies that software’s version. To find the console’s system menu version instead, open System Settings > System > System Update, as described in Nintendo’s system menu version instructions.

Check whether the game has an update
If the console is online and an update is available, Nintendo says you may be prompted to download it when you start the game. You can also check manually:
- Highlight the game on the HOME Menu.
- Press + or −.
- Choose Software Update, then Via the Internet. See Nintendo’s instructions for updating Switch 2 software.
The software menu can include options such as Software Information, Software Update, Software Data, and Save Data Cloud. Available options vary by application, according to Nintendo’s guide to software menu options. Nintendo also documents matching software versions with nearby local users as an update route in some circumstances; that feature does not require internet access.
