Start with the work you need to do—photo editing, digital painting, vector design, page layout, or video—then define what “without generative AI” means to you. A tool built for your creative task is only a candidate, not proof that it lacks generative features. Check the exact app, version, plan, platform, and settings before relying on any AI-free claim.
Define what “without generative AI” means to you
There are several different boundaries, and they require different checks:
- No generative use: You do not want to use tools that create or alter content from prompts or other inputs. Optional features may be acceptable if you can avoid using them.
- No visible AI controls: You want to avoid prompts, menus, or other interface elements that advertise or surface generative tools. Hiding controls may improve the interface, but it does not necessarily disable the underlying capability.
- No generative features included: You want software whose vendor does not include generative features at all. This is the strictest standard and needs evidence about the exact product and version—not just a setting that hides tools.
Be precise about which boundary matters. A product should not be called “AI-free” simply because its generative tools are optional, switched off, or out of sight.
Choose by creative task, not by an “AI-free” label
Shortlist software that covers the work and outputs you actually need. These products are starting points by category, not a ranked list or certifications that they contain no generative AI.

| Creative task | Candidate | What the cited source establishes | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Raster and photo editing | GIMP | GIMP describes itself as an image-editing application. | Review the current release, relevant plug-ins, and any connected services. The product overview is not a permanent AI-free guarantee. |
| Painting and illustration | Krita | Krita describes painting-oriented tools and workflows. | Assess brush and layer workflows, tablet support, export requirements, and current feature behavior. |
| Photo, vector, and layout work | Affinity | Affinity positions its offering around professional creative work across these categories. | Confirm the specific application and version, as well as optional account or plan features. The product page does not establish a blanket no-AI guarantee. |
| Video editing and post-production | DaVinci Resolve | Blackmagic Design presents Resolve as a video post-production application. | Check the current version and the features included in the edition you plan to use. Category fit is not an AI-free certification. |
| Illustration on iPad | Procreate | A Creative Bloq article published January 17, 2026, describes it as an iPad illustration app and reports that its developer publicly rejected generative AI. | This is secondary reporting. Verify current developer statements and app behavior before treating it as an absolute guarantee. |
Compare shortlisted apps against your workflow
Once you have candidates for the right task, compare the details that determine whether they will work for your projects and collaborators.
- Task coverage and depth: Make a list of must-have jobs—such as masking, painting with layers, vector editing, page composition, or a specific video workflow—and check the app against that list.
- Platform and device support: Confirm the operating system and device you use are supported. For drawing, check tablet and stylus compatibility rather than assuming it.
- File exchange: Identify the formats you need to open, edit, export, and hand off. If collaborators use another app, verify which parts of a project survive the exchange.
- Learning and collaboration: Consider how readily your team can adopt the software, and whether it fits the way you share and revise work.
- Cost model: Check the current price and whether access depends on a recurring plan, an account, or optional paid features. Compare the terms for the exact product and market you will use.
- Privacy and data handling: Find out whether relevant features send content to a cloud service, and review the applicable documentation and account settings.
Verify how generative controls actually work
Official documentation can clarify a particular control, but a menu setting should not be treated as a product-wide disable switch unless the documentation says it is one.

Illustrator: hiding the Generative menu
Adobe’s Illustrator generative AI FAQ, updated June 1, 2026, lists tools including text-to-vector, text-to-pattern, Generative Shape Fill, Generative Expand, and Remove Background. It says the Generative menu can be shown or hidden. That describes a visibility control; the FAQ does not say that hiding the menu disables every generative function in Illustrator.
Photoshop: a toggle for one optional beta workspace
Adobe’s Photoshop AI Assisted Editor FAQ, updated September 29, 2026, describes AI Assisted Editor as an optional, prompt-based beta workspace and explains how to turn off its toggle in Preferences. The FAQ distinguishes that workspace from Pro Editor/full Photoshop. Its toggle is evidence about that workspace, not a global switch for all generative Photoshop tools.

Use a version-specific verification checklist
- Find the official documentation and release notes for the exact app and version you intend to use.
- Check whether generative functions are included, and whether they are enabled by default.
- Read what each relevant setting does: does it disable a feature, or only hide its controls?
- Check whether use involves cloud services, and review relevant data-handling information.
- Look for third-party plug-ins, connected services, or optional plans that could add features beyond the base application.
- Recheck when the version, plan, or deployment changes; feature behavior can change over time and by region.
If an employer or contract prohibits generative AI, do not rely on a marketing label or a hidden menu. Ask the vendor for written confirmation covering the precise version and deployment you would use.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Make the choice with evidence that matches your boundary
Choose the app that meets your creative requirements and your definition of “without generative AI.” For a no-use preference, optional tools may be compatible if you can reliably avoid them. For a no-visible-controls preference, check interface settings and how they behave. For a requirement that the product contain no generative features, look for an explicit, current statement about the exact app and version; if the evidence does not establish that, do not treat the product as certified AI-free.
