The comparison is shorthand, not an official genre label: S-GAME CEO Soulframe Liang used the John Wick analogy for the game’s cinematic assassin fantasy and Chinese setting, while a hands-on preview described a blend of fast combat and Souls-like exploration. PlayStation lists the PS5 release for October 29, 2026.
What the Dark Souls and John Wick comparison means
In an interview with Inverse published March 26, 2025, S-GAME CEO Soulframe Liang said, “You can easily see this as something like John Wick set in 16th-century China.” The analogy points to a cinematic assassin fantasy and setting; it does not mean the game is officially based on the films.

The Dark Souls side of the shorthand refers primarily to exploration and world design, rather than a claim that Phantom Blade Zero is a Souls game. Liang also named Devil May Cry as an inspiration for combat and Resident Evil for cinematic, emotional storytelling. The game’s mix is better understood across those separate influences than as a one-to-one match with any single series.
What gameplay has been shown
Inverse writer Hayes Madsen reported playing for an hour. In that hands-on preview, he described playing Soul, an assassin opposing the organization that controls him, with combat built around fast weapon combos, timed parries, dodges, and weapon-specific moves. Exploration links the major encounters, with bosses appearing along the way. Those details are preview impressions, not a claim of independent testing.

Combat pace and defense
The reported emphasis is on active offense and timing: players use combos and weapon moves while relying on parries and dodges to handle incoming attacks. That suggests a different combat feel from treating the game as a slow, purely defensive Souls-style experience, but the preview alone does not establish how the full game balances those approaches.
Weapons and exploration
Madsen’s preview notes weapon variety and exploration between boss fights. It does not provide a complete account of the available weapons or the overall structure of the world, so the clearest supported comparison is that combat and exploration both matter—not that the game reproduces another series’ exact systems.
