1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPS5 controller stick drift is unwanted movement registered while the analog stick is untouched. First confirm the controller is actually reporting input, then try Sony’s reset and software-update steps. If drift continues, cleaning may help when debris is interfering with movement, but persistent drift can also come from worn joystick hardware or a circuit-board fault. The right repair depends on whether you have a standard DualSense or a DualSense Edge.
Confirm that the controller is drifting
In a game, drift may look like a character walking or the camera moving even though you are not touching the stick. To check the controller itself, iFixit recommends connecting it to a computer and viewing its input with a controller tester: PS5 Controller Stick Drift. If the tester shows directional input while the stick is at rest, the controller is reporting movement.
This test confirms the symptom, not its cause. It cannot tell you whether the problem is software or settings, debris, a worn joystick, or a faulty circuit board. A game’s dead-zone setting may affect whether small inputs are visible during play, but it does not establish that the controller hardware is healthy.
Try Sony’s troubleshooting steps
- Turn off the PS5 and disconnect the controller.
- Reset the controller. Use a small tool to press and hold the reset button on the back of the controller for at least five seconds.
- Reconnect it with the official USB cable and press the PS button.
- Update PS5 system software if an update is available. Sony says DualSense controller device software updates are delivered with PS5 system software updates. A manual controller-update path is available at Settings > Accessories > Controller (General).
Sony documents these steps for DualSense troubleshooting and directs users whose issue remains unresolved to PlayStation Repairs. The support page is for the US; check Sony support for your region before arranging service.

- PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
When cleaning is worth considering
Debris or grease around a stick may interfere with its movement, so cleaning is a possibility when grime is visible or the stick does not move freely. iFixit’s DualSense Controller V2 Stick Drift Fix specifically covers drift caused by gunk or grease. Its scope should not be generalized to every DualSense revision or every cause of drift.
Cleaning is not a guaranteed fix for worn joystick hardware or a board fault. The cited guidance does not establish any particular spray or liquid as Sony-approved, so do not treat spraying the stick as a universal or manufacturer-endorsed repair.

Choose a repair based on your controller
| Controller or route | Repair approach | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| DualSense Edge | Replace the stick module | Sony says the module is separately sold and replaceable; left and right modules are interchangeable. Follow the manual’s handling cautions. |
| Standard DualSense | Replace the joystick by soldering | iFixit’s guide calls for intermediate soldering skills and describes desoldering as difficult. Confirm the controller revision and part compatibility. |
| Either model | Request official repair | Sony directs users to PlayStation Repairs when troubleshooting does not resolve the problem. Eligibility, cost, warranty coverage, and turnaround depend on the controller and region. |
DualSense Edge: user-replaceable module
Sony documents the Edge stick module as a separately sold replacement part, not as a part for the standard DualSense. Its manual says to discharge static, avoid touching the connectors, and secure the front cover before turning the controller on. See Sony’s Controllers Support page and the DualSense Edge instruction manual for model-specific instructions.
Standard DualSense: soldered joystick repair
A standard DualSense does not use the Edge’s user-replaceable stick module. iFixit’s DualSense Joystick Replacement guide describes replacing the joystick as a soldering repair, with intermediate soldering skills required. Desoldering can be difficult, so this route is better suited to someone with appropriate tools and repair experience. Check the exact controller revision and replacement-part compatibility before buying a joystick.
