The workable options depend on the specific game: it may already support an upscaler that compatible middleware can replace, or it may have a game-specific mod. A graphics wrapper can help ReShade attach to some very old games, but it does not add DLSS.
Why ReShade cannot simply switch on DLSS
ReShade is a post-processing framework that applies shaders and other effects to a rendered image. Its add-on API, introduced with ReShade 5.0, expands what developers can build, but extensibility is not the same as a universal DLSS implementation. ReShade’s official site does not document a general feature that adds DLSS Super Resolution to any game.
DLSS is not merely a spatial resize or sharpening filter applied to a finished frame. It is an integration path for a game or application. NVIDIA’s DLSS Programming Guide, dated March 31, 2026, describes how to integrate DLSS using the DLSS SDK. That distinction matters: a post-processing filter cannot supply game-render data that the game never provides.
NVIDIA’s guide also states that using DLSS requires an NVIDIA RTX GPU and a Windows environment that meets its requirements. Those requirements can change with SDK versions, so check the current guide for the specific DLSS version rather than assuming that installing ReShade or owning an RTX card is sufficient.

Which route fits your game?

If an upscaler is already in the game
OptiScaler is a conditional middleware option, not a universal ReShade plug-in. Its README describes replacing upscalers in games that already support DLSS 2+, FSR2+, or XeSS. Consult the project’s game-specific compatibility information for the exact title and follow its current instructions. Do not infer support for a game just because it uses the same engine or graphics API as another listed title.
If the game has no upscaler inputs
There is no universal ReShade-only procedure to add DLSS, FSR, or XeSS to a game with no upscaler path. A game-specific mod would need to provide the necessary integration, and its availability and compatibility must be verified for the named game. Without that, ReShade can still offer post-processing effects, but those effects should not be described as DLSS.

If ReShade cannot attach to the game
Some older games use graphics APIs that need a compatibility layer before ReShade can work. ReShade’s troubleshooting guidance discusses d3d8to9 for DirectX 8, and DXGL or dgVoodoo2 for certain older APIs. These are API-translation routes, not upscalers, and may introduce technical or visual problems. Use only the route relevant to the game’s API and check title-specific guidance before changing files.
How to check before installing anything
- Identify the game and version. Advice for one release or patch may not apply to another.
- Find the rendering API. Check the game’s documentation or reliable title-specific support information. Compare that API with ReShade’s supported options and troubleshooting guidance.
- Check the game’s own graphics settings. Look for DLSS, FSR, or XeSS. If one is present, check whether OptiScaler’s compatibility information covers that exact game.
- If there is no in-game upscaler, search for a verified game-specific mod. Do not substitute a generic ReShade preset or wrapper and assume it supplies missing upscaler integration.
- For online games, check the rules and anti-cheat implications first. OptiScaler’s documentation warns that it may trigger anti-cheat and bans in online games. If the policy is unclear, do not inject or replace rendering components while playing online.
What to expect from ReShade instead
When ReShade supports the game’s graphics API and attaches successfully, it can add post-processing effects. A spatial scaling or sharpening effect may change how the image looks, but it is not equivalent to temporal upscaling that uses game-provided rendering information. Do not expect a generic filter to reproduce DLSS behavior or guarantee a performance improvement.

ReShade 6.8.0 was released on August 2, 2026, according to its official site. The release number does not change the basic limitation: ReShade’s general-purpose post-processing and add-on capabilities do not by themselves retrofit DLSS into every older game.
