What “hit-and-run” means for GTA 6’s wanted system
Nelson’s description frames evading police as something that can begin with leaving the scene, rather than staying to fight a growing response. In the preview, he said the team wanted to encourage a “hit-and-run style of gameplay”: commit a crime, move on before police arrive, and avoid unnecessary violence. The wording refers to the intended play style, not a separate wanted-level mode.

The explanation comes from a transcript attributed to IGN’s Rockstar North preview and republished by Game Up News. The account describes a preview demonstration, so its details should not be treated as independently verified rules for the released game.
How the preview says police learn about a crime
Nelson said a crime has to be witnessed or an alarm has to be triggered for it to be reported to law enforcement. In practical terms, the demonstration presents observation or an alarm as the route from an incident to police attention. It does not spell out every crime’s reporting conditions or establish a complete rulebook for the final game.

Why leaving the scene may not clear all police attention
In the demonstration, the map marks a hot area connected to police attention. Nelson said police would remain there for a while; when he later hovered over the area, one star remained associated with it. That suggests the scene can continue to matter after the player leaves, rather than all attention instantly following the character or disappearing.
The preview does not give a timer for how long the area stays hot, explain how often police return, or define exactly how the map indicator behaves in every situation.

Ways Nelson showed players could reduce police perception
For the scenario shown, Nelson demonstrated or described several ways to make the player less recognizable or let the response cool down:
- Leave the area: Move away from the scene rather than prolonging the encounter.
- Change vehicles: Switch cars to alter what police are tracking.
- Change clothes: Change appearance to reduce police perception.
- Wait: Give the heat time to die down.
- Separate Jason and Lucia: Split the characters up rather than keeping them together.
These are options described in the preview, not guaranteed escape tricks or a complete list of the final game’s mechanics. The interview does not specify exact timings, detection ranges, or the conditions under which each option works.

Wanted attention is not the same as Criminal Profile
Nelson described Criminal Profile as a separate system that tracks what sort of criminal the player is. In the preview’s explanation, repeatedly going beyond what is necessary—such as escalating violence instead of moving on—may shift that profile. GamesRadar+ also reported that the consequences of Criminal Profile had not been spelled out.
The distinction is useful: wanted attention concerns police responding to an incident, while Criminal Profile concerns the broader pattern of the player’s criminal behavior. The available comments do not establish all profile effects or how they change the story or gameplay.
