What did Yoko Taro say about continuing to make games?
At a September 22, 2026 conversation at The Tenth Mosaic in Tokyo, Taro spoke with game creator Keisuke Okabe about his future work. Taro, known for Drakengard and NieR, reportedly said he had already done what he wanted with the original Drakengard and felt as though he was living out his “remaining days.” He said he could soon live on savings and a pension and, emotionally, did not want to work anymore.
Still, Taro reportedly named “dementia prevention” as one reason he continues making games. He said he had heard stories about people who were highly focused on work developing dementia after retiring, and described treating the frustrating parts of game development as something he could tell himself was “good for preventing dementia.” Those remarks were reported by 4Gamer on October 7, 2026.
Does making games prevent dementia?
Taro’s comments do not establish that game development—or playing games—prevents dementia. The reported explanation is his personal motivation, prompted by stories he said he had heard; it is not a clinical finding or a claim supported by evidence in the cited coverage. The report offers no basis for treating game-making as a health intervention.

Where did the remark come from?
The Tenth Mosaic was a game-culture event held at the Institut français de Tokyo on September 22 and 23, 2026. The opening day included a conversation between Taro and Okabe. 4Gamer’s October 7 report is the contemporaneous account for this story. An English-language report from AUTOMATON WEST, published on October 8, also covers the comments, but its translated wording should not be mistaken for an English transcript of Taro’s remarks.
