To find out whether your PC can run a horror game, compare the game’s current minimum and recommended requirements with your computer’s actual specs. Check every listed category—not just the graphics card—and treat the requirement tiers as guidance, not a guarantee of smooth performance at your preferred settings.

1. Find the exact game’s current requirements

Open the game’s official store or publisher listing and record both its minimum and recommended specifications. Requirements are specific to each title, so a game’s horror label does not tell you what hardware it needs. Check the listing again near purchase in case it has changed.

Read any performance targets and notes attached to the specifications, including resolution, frame rate, graphics preset, SSD, internet access, or other required software. For example, Trepang2’s Steam support listing gives separate minimum and recommended hardware alongside targets of low 1080p at 30 FPS and high 1080p at 60 FPS. Those targets describe that game’s tiers; they are not universal promises for other titles.

2. Find your PC’s actual specifications

Use DxDiag on Windows

  1. Search Windows for dxdiag and open DirectX Diagnostic Tool.
  2. On the System tab, check your Windows version and DirectX information.
  3. Inspect the display tabs for graphics-device information. If more than one display or adapter is listed, check the other tabs too so you do not overlook the GPU the game may use.
  4. Select Save All Information… if you want a report to refer to while comparing.

Microsoft’s DirectX guidance explains how to check the DirectX version in the System tab. A Steam developer announcement also describes using DxDiag to inspect system and display information.

Check which graphics device matters

Laptops and systems with multiple displays can show more than one adapter. Compare the game’s GPU requirement with the relevant graphics device, not simply the first name you see. If you cannot tell which adapter the game will use, treat the comparison as uncertain rather than assuming the more powerful GPU is active.

3. Compare every requirement, one category at a time

Match each item in the game listing to the corresponding information on your PC. Do not substitute a vague label such as “gaming laptop” for a model number or skip requirements that seem secondary.

  • Connectivity: 4 x USB-A 3.2 | 4 x USB-A 2.0 | 1 x LAN | WiFi 5 | Bluetooth 5.0 | 7.1 Channel Audio
  • Tempered Side Case Panel | Custom RGB Lighting | Keyboard and Mouse
  • 1 Year Parts & Labor Warranty, Free Lifetime Tech Support
  • Operating system: Check the supported Windows version and whether the game specifies 64-bit Windows.
  • Processor: Compare the CPU model with the listed CPU requirement.
  • Graphics card and VRAM: Compare the GPU model and any stated dedicated video-memory requirement.
  • RAM: Compare system memory, which is separate from graphics-card memory.
  • DirectX or graphics API: Check that the required version is supported.
  • Storage: Compare the game’s required available space with free disk space, and note whether it requires or recommends an SSD.
  • Other targets or conditions: Include any stated resolution, frame rate, graphics preset, network connection, or additional software.

For instance, Until Dawn’s Steam support listing specifies Windows 10 or 11, processor, RAM, graphics card, DirectX 12, and 70 GB of SSD storage, with separate minimum and recommended tiers. Its listing gives 8 GB RAM as minimum and 16 GB as recommended; those are requirements for Until Dawn, not typical figures for horror games. Likewise, DEVOUR’s Steam page lists DirectX 11, illustrating why requirements cannot be inferred from genre.

4. Interpret minimum and recommended requirements honestly

Minimum does not automatically mean smooth play at every resolution or graphics setting. Recommended does not guarantee a particular result on every configuration either. Use the game’s own notes to understand what each tier is meant to target, then compare that target with how you want to play.

Perfect for gamers, students, content creators, and home office users seeking reliable performance without the hassle of building a PC themselves. • If your PC meets the minimum tier but falls short of recommended, describe it as meeting minimum—not as a sure fit for high settings or your preferred frame rate.
  • If the listing gives a resolution, frame-rate, or preset target, keep that target attached to the relevant tier.
  • If a CPU or GPU has no clear equivalent in the listing, do not guess based on its name or age. Look for information about that exact hardware and game version, or treat the result as unresolved.

5. Use an automatic checker only as a cross-check

CanItRunPC says it compares PC specifications with minimum and recommended requirements carried from Steam pages. That can save some manual comparison, but the service description does not establish flawless hardware detection or predict performance on every configuration. Confirm that it has the correct game listing and detected PC parts, then verify them against the official requirements.

6. Make a purchase decision from the comparison

A useful check ends with a category-by-category result: which requirements your PC meets, which it misses, and whether those differences matter to the performance target you want. If a component falls below a listed requirement or an adapter is unclear, the answer is not a confident yes. Resolve the uncertainty for that exact game and hardware before buying; do not assume an upgrade is needed until you have identified a specific mismatch.
