If a Steam game is missing textures or other content, crashes, or appears to have damaged installation files, run Steam’s built-in file verification first. It checks the installed game files and replaces files Steam identifies as missing or damaged. The check is a useful first repair step, though it does not guarantee every launch or installation problem will be fixed.
How do I verify game files on Steam?
- Restart your computer, then launch Steam.
- Open Library, right-click the game, and select Properties. You can also open the game’s Library page and select the gear icon, then Properties.
- Choose Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files and wait for the check to finish. Steam says it can take several minutes.
Steam checks the installation and replaces files that need repair. Run the check for one game at a time, and avoid doing it while other intensive tasks—such as a virus scan or disk defragmentation—are running. Steam Support’s verification instructions describe the current client steps.
Why did some files fail to validate on Steam?
A message that one or more files failed to verify does not automatically mean the game is still broken. Steam Support says this is normal for most Steam games: local configuration files may differ from the originals and are intentionally not replaced. If the message concerns those files and the game works, you can ignore it.
What to try if verification does not fix the problem
Choose the next step based on what is failing. For a download or update error, work through Steam’s client remedies before resorting to reinstalling.

If a download or update is stuck or failing
- Restart the computer and Steam. Restarting can clear system state and release file locks.
- Clear the download cache: in Steam, open Steam > Settings > Downloads > Clear Download Cache. This does not remove installed games, but you will need to sign in to Steam again afterward. See Steam Support’s download-cache instructions.
- Repair the library folder: open Steam > Settings > Storage, open the menu for the relevant library, and select Repair Folder.
- Verify the game’s installed files using the steps above.
- Change the download region in Steam > Settings > Downloads, then try the download or update again.
- Move the game to another drive if one is available. Steam lists this as a diagnostic option when installation or update problems persist.
Steam’s installation and update troubleshooting guide covers these remedies. Avoid casually uninstalling Steam: Steam warns that uninstalling the client deletes game content, so protect or back up that content before considering it.
If the problem keeps returning
Persistent install or update errors can have causes beyond the game files. Steam lists possible factors including overclocking, network behavior, and drive or RAM errors; these are possibilities, not a diagnosis of your computer. Start with Steam’s basic troubleshooting guidance, and seek local IT support for advanced hardware checks rather than treating a verification mismatch as proof of a specific component failure.
What if the game executable is missing?
Before downloading repeatedly, check whether your antivirus or other security software quarantined the game executable. Steam says this is a common cause of a missing executable, but a malware alert should be taken seriously. Review the security report and the file’s details; do not blindly disable protection or allow an unknown file. If you are unsure whether the detection is a false positive, contact the antivirus provider and report the issue to Steam. If you are confident the file is safe and it was removed, verify the game files to restore it. See Steam Support’s missing-executable guidance.

File verification only checks the game installation; launch failures can also involve operating-system updates, drivers, conflicting software, system requirements, or platform support.
