Look at world design, character builds and agency, quests, combat, and the platforms and editions on offer. Keep announced features separate from demonstrated or released mechanics, then weight the categories that matter most to you instead of reducing the comparison to one similarity score.
Start with evidence, not the genre label
“Open-world RPG” and “shooter RPG” describe a broad category, not a guaranteed level of choice, systemic interaction, or role-playing depth. A useful comparison records what is confirmed for each game, what is reported by journalists, and what remains unestablished. This distinction matters especially when comparing a released game with a newly announced one.

For example, CD PROJEKT RED describes Cyberpunk 2077 as an open-world action-adventure RPG set in Night City, and highlights jobs, character and playstyle customization, reputation, and upgrades. Those are useful reference points; they do not mean another game with a cyberpunk setting will offer the same systems.
PC Gamer’s report on No Law describes it as an announced cyberpunk first-person open-world shooter RPG from Neon Giant and cautions against treating the label as proof of immersive-sim depth. Until specific mechanics are confirmed or demonstrated, describe them as unknown rather than promised outcomes.

Compare the world: breadth, density, and traversal
Ask what exploration actually involves. Is the world presented as a broad map, a dense city, or a set of connected areas? Are districts and traversal methods described in concrete terms, or is the available claim only that the game is “open world”? Theme and structure are separate: two games can both look cyberpunk while offering very different spaces to explore.
- Setting: Identify the named location and the game’s stated thematic framing.
- Structure: Look for confirmed details about districts, map scale, or how areas connect.
- Traversal: Record specific movement or vehicle systems only when a source describes them.
- Evidence status: Mark promotional descriptions as advertised, and reserve stronger claims about how exploration works for demonstrated or released play.
Test RPG agency through builds and consequences
Character customization is only one part of role-playing. Check whether a game lets players develop materially different builds, whether those builds alter how encounters are handled, and whether choices change quests or later outcomes. Avoid inferring branching stories from the word “RPG.”

- Cyberpunk 2077 is an open-world, action-adventure story set in Night City
- Become a cyberpunk, an urban mercenary equipped with cybernetic enhancements and build your legend on the streets of Night City
- Take the riskiest job of your life and go after a prototype implant that is the key to immortality
These are also useful questions to bring to Cyberpunk 2077: one reader discussion phrases the query as “How are the RPG elements in Cyberpunk 2077?” and focuses on choices, builds, branching story, and customization. That wording is one person’s question, not evidence of a wider consensus, but it captures the distinctions a comparison should investigate.
CD PROJEKT RED’s original introduction framed Cyberpunk 2077 as narrative-driven and as a role-playing game. For another title, compare that kind of framing with named mechanics and documented consequences; do not assume that similar genre positioning means similar agency.

Separate narrative framing from quest behavior
Describe what is known about the story’s structure without turning its premise into a claim about player freedom. A narrative may be advertised as branching, mission-led, or open-ended, but those labels do not establish how choices play out in particular quests.
- Note whether the source describes a main story, optional content, or both.
- Record any specific choice and consequence only when it is documented.
- Label broad story language as framing, not proof that quests branch in a particular way.
Compare combat by asking what builds change
Weapon lists alone make weak comparisons. Ask which approaches are documented and whether upgrades change tactics, available tools, or how encounters unfold. If a new game’s combat options are not yet established, say so rather than filling the gap with genre assumptions.

CD PROJEKT RED’s 2023 Ultimate Edition announcement said Update 2.0 introduced redesigned skill trees, vehicle combat, and enhanced enemy and police AI. Treat those as the publisher’s claims about that update, not as a universal benchmark for every open-world RPG or as proof that another title has equivalent systems.

Best Value
In a 2026 announcement, CD PROJEKT RED said Cyberpunk 2077 would be available on Battle.net and described separate purchase choices for the base game, the expansion, and Ultimate Edition. This is a time-sensitive availability announcement; confirm current listings and included content before buying.
The publisher’s 2023 announcement described Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition as including the base game and Phantom Liberty. Because edition contents and listings can vary or change, verify the current product page for your storefront and region rather than relying on an older announcement alone.
Use a consistent scorecard
When comparing two games, apply the same questions and evidence standard to both. “Not established” is a useful result when a title is newly announced; it is more accurate than awarding it features based on its genre tag.
| Dimension | What to record | Evidence status |
|---|---|---|
| World and setting | Theme, location, exploration structure, density, and traversal | Confirmed, reported, or not established |
| RPG agency | Build options, customization, choices, and documented consequences | Named mechanics and outcomes, not just a genre label |
| Narrative and quests | Story framing, optional content, and demonstrated quest behavior | Keep advertised framing distinct from verified branching |
| Combat | Available approaches and how progression changes encounters | Document systems rather than counting weapons |
| Practical fit | Platforms, editions, and included content for the relevant region | Check current official listings |
Then decide which rows matter to you. If you want character-building depth, give builds and consequences more weight than visual similarity. If exploration is the priority, focus on world structure and traversal. A game can resemble Cyberpunk 2077 in setting or perspective while differing substantially in its quests, agency, or combat.
