To set up a Meta Quest 3, sign in to the Meta Horizon mobile app with your Meta account, pair the headset, then put it on and follow its setup prompts. Connect to Wi-Fi when prompted, map a clear play area with Guardian, and choose a first app from the Meta Horizon Store. Exact screen names and prompt order can change, so follow the wording shown on your headset.
Before you begin
Install and open the Meta Horizon mobile app, then sign in to the Meta account you want associated with the headset. Meta’s device setup guide documents the broad sequence: sign in in the app, pair the headset, and continue setup while wearing it. It is a developer-facing guide, not a complete consumer manual, so it does not establish every current Quest 3 screen or button label.
For ordinary consumer use, you do not need to enable developer mode or complete developer verification. Those steps are for development tasks such as authorizing development builds and debugging, not for setting up a headset to use Store apps.
Pair the headset and finish its on-device setup
- Open the Meta Horizon app and sign in to the Meta account you intend to use with the Quest 3.
- Use the app’s headset-pairing flow and follow its prompts to pair the Quest 3. The precise button names may vary with app version.
- Put on the headset and follow the on-device setup prompts to continue. If a prompt in the headset asks you to complete an action in the app, follow that prompt rather than relying on a generic screen-by-screen walkthrough.
Meta’s developer instructions support this overall sequence but do not verify the current consumer app’s exact labels or every pairing screen. Do not treat developer-specific requirements, such as a same-network rule, as established requirements for routine consumer pairing.

Connect the Quest 3 to Wi-Fi
Connect the headset to your Wi-Fi network when the setup prompts ask you to. Wi-Fi enables online functions and access to Store apps. The available setup documentation does not establish the current consumer screen order, exact menu labels, or a requirement that the phone and headset use the same network for first-time pairing. Use the network options presented by the headset and follow its displayed prompts.
Set up Guardian for your play space
Guardian defines a boundary for your play area and provides visual proximity cues as you approach its edge. Meta says the boundary experience can fade in passthrough near the edge, helping you see objects outside the mapped area. Its boundary documentation describes those behaviors; the practical priority is to clear hazards before mapping.

Choose stationary or room-scale play
- Stationary: Choose this when you have limited clear floor space or expect to remain in one place, with little movement beyond reaching or leaning.
- Room-scale: Choose this when you can move around within a clear area and want the boundary to cover that space.
Meta’s 2022 developer guidance suggested a 9 ft × 9 ft room with a 6 ft × 6 ft playable area for room-scale experiences. That is older developer advice, not a current universal Quest 3 minimum or a guarantee that a given space is safe. Use the headset’s current boundary setup and the space you can actually keep clear.
Map a safe boundary
- Move furniture, cables, pets, and other hazards out of the intended play area before drawing the boundary.
- Follow the headset’s Guardian instructions to select a stationary or room-scale setup and map the space.
- Keep the boundary inside the clear area, allowing room to move without reaching walls, furniture, or other obstacles.
- Redraw the boundary when the room layout changes or when the saved boundary no longer matches the space.
Meta’s public safety overview also describes Space Sense, which can show outlines of people, pets, and other objects crossing the boundary. Treat it as an optional aid, not a substitute for clearing the play area; availability and settings can vary, and a current in-headset menu path is not established here.

Choose and start your first app
For a beginner setup, start with the Meta Horizon Store on the headset. Meta’s developer setup documentation says Quest defaults to apps installed from that Store; developer mode and unknown-source installation are not needed to browse or install ordinary consumer apps.
Compare apps by how much movement they require, whether they are mixed reality or fully immersive, their price, and whether they are available in the Meta Horizon Store. The available setup sources do not rank particular first apps or establish their current prices, so check the Store listing for the latest details and choose an experience suited to your comfort and available space.
