Choose based first on the hardware you own and the games you want to play. Meta Quest 3 runs supported VR apps on the headset itself, works wirelessly, and can also connect to a PC. PlayStation VR2 is built around PS5 and its compatible game library; it can also play SteamVR games on a Windows PC, but that requires an adapter and gives up several PS5 features. Neither is the automatic winner for every setup.

These are manufacturer specifications, not a comparative hands-on test. Resolution, refresh rate, and display technology alone do not establish which headset will look or feel better to you.
Should I get Quest 3 or PS VR2 if I already own a PS5?
If your PS5 is the center of your gaming setup and you want its PS VR2-compatible games, PS VR2 is the more direct fit. It connects to PS5 with one USB-C cable, and Sony’s primary setup requires the console, headset, Sense controllers, a compatible PS VR2 game, and a DualSense controller plus a TV or monitor for initial setup. Quest 3 may suit you better if you want VR away from the console, standalone apps, color passthrough, or the option to connect to a PC as well. It does not turn PS5 games into Quest games: compare the specific titles you intend to play across their respective platforms before choosing.

Can I use PS VR2 without a PS5?
Yes, for PC VR, but not as a standalone headset. Sony supports PS VR2 on a Windows PC through its PC adapter, with SteamVR as the PC game library. You need the headset, adapter, a USB 3.0 Type-A connection, and a separately sold DisplayPort 1.4 cable; the controllers pair over Bluetooth. A separate Bluetooth adapter may be needed if your computer lacks Bluetooth, and Sony cautions that not every Bluetooth adapter works properly. PC use is not feature-identical to PS5 use. Sony lists HDR output, headset feedback, eye tracking, adaptive triggers, and full Sense controller haptic feedback as unsupported on PC; basic controller vibration remains. Sony also says not to use an extension cable or USB hub with the PC adapter. Check Sony’s current PC requirements and the exact games you want before buying, as those requirements can change.

Can Quest 3 play PC VR games?
Yes. Meta lists PC VR through Quest Link, either by cable or Air Link. That gives Quest 3 a standalone option as well as a PC-connected one; the experience and suitability of Air Link depend on your PC and wireless network. How do the displays and passthrough compare?
Meta lists Quest 3’s LCD at 2064 × 2208 pixels per eye, up to 120 Hz, and a 110° horizontal field of view. Sony lists PS VR2’s OLED at 2000 × 2040 pixels per eye, a 90–120 Hz refresh range, and an approximately 110° field of view. Quest 3’s documented color stereoscopic passthrough and depth sensor make it the option to consider if mixed-reality apps or seeing your room in color while wearing the headset matters to you. What room and game compatibility should I check?
Check the play style and space requirement for each game, not just the headset. Sony classifies PS VR2 games as sitting, standing, or room-scale and says room-scale titles need at least 2m × 2m (6 ft 7 in × 6 ft 7 in). Its compatibility guidance directs players to check individual PlayStation Store listings. Meta lists a 6.5 ft × 6.5 ft minimum space for Quest 3 stationary or room-scale play. - If you have limited clear floor space, prioritize titles explicitly designed for sitting or standing.
- Before a room-scale session, clear the area and verify that you can move safely within the game’s stated boundary.
- Do not assume that ownership of a game for one VR platform grants compatibility with the other headset.
How should I compare total cost?
Meta’s US family/product page lists Quest 3 starting at $599.99, as of October 7, 2026. That is a listed starting price, not a guaranteed checkout price or full-system cost; storage configuration, offers, accessories, and stock can change. (Meta: Quest family page)
The official sources cited here do not establish a current PS VR2 US price. Compare current prices in your region and account for hardware you would still need: a PS5 for the primary PS VR2 setup, or a compatible Windows PC and the additional adapter and cable for PS VR2 PC play. Quest 3 can run supported apps on its own, while PC VR use still depends on an appropriate PC. Your existing hardware can change which option costs less to get started.

Which headset fits your setup?
- Lean Quest 3 if you want standalone wireless play, color passthrough, or one headset that can also connect to a PC—and especially if you do not own a PS5. Factor Meta’s battery estimate into how you plan sessions.
- Lean PS VR2 if you already own a PS5, want PS VR2-compatible games, prefer its OLED specification, and are comfortable playing tethered to the console.
- For a PC-first setup, compare the actual games and hardware. Quest 3 supports Link by cable or Air Link. PS VR2 needs the PC adapter and DisplayPort cable and does not retain several PS5 features on PC.
- For a small room, choose by title and play style. A sitting game may fit where a room-scale title does not; verify each game’s requirements before purchase.
