You can earn some Overwatch cosmetics and currency without paying, but rewards and availability change by season. Before spending, check the exact item’s in-game listing, the currency it requires, and what the live free and paid reward tracks offer. A paid Battle Pass makes sense only if the rewards you want justify its current cost and the time you expect to play.
Can you get Overwatch skins for free?
Yes. Free play can award cosmetics and currencies, although the exact rewards are seasonal rather than guaranteed year-round. Blizzard’s Season 18 announcement listed a Legendary Loot Box, 600 Overwatch Coins, 1,500 Credits, and two Epic skins among free rewards. Treat those as Season 18 offer details, not a standing promise for later seasons; check the live game for current rewards and terms.

Start with the season’s free reward track, challenges, events, and any other rewards Blizzard currently identifies as free. The same Season 18 announcement distinguishes those from the Premium Battle Pass, which includes seasonal cosmetics and up to 80 Mythic Prisms. Check the current pass contents rather than assuming a previous season’s reward mix repeats.
How to avoid spending more than you planned
- Set a limit before opening the shop. Choose the maximum you are willing to spend on optional cosmetics, separate from essential expenses. Earned currency is not a reason to raise that limit.
- Choose the specific cosmetic first. Check its live in-game listing for its current price and required currency. Do not rely on old screenshots, remembered prices, or historical guides.
- Check free routes. Review the current season’s free track, challenges, events, and other stated free rewards before considering a purchase.
- Assess the paid pass against your plans. Compare its current price and exact rewards with the cosmetics you actually want and the time you expect to play. There is no universal value threshold: the pass is only useful if its rewards and required progression suit you.
- Wait if you are unsure. Some offers have limited availability. Blizzard’s Season 4 announcement, for example, gave explicit availability dates for a collection. An expiring offer does not mean it fits your budget.
Which currency does a cosmetic cost?
Do not assume all cosmetics use the same currency or that an item can be bought with a currency accepted for another item. Blizzard’s seasonal announcements refer to both Overwatch Coins and Credits, and eligibility can vary. Read the particular item’s live listing before spending; older shop rules may not describe current eligibility.

Historical announcements can provide context, but not a reliable current price list. In its 2024 Season 10 developer update, Blizzard said the free Coins available per season had increased from 540 to 600 and described Coins earned across Free and Premium Battle Pass tracks. Those are dated system details, not proof that every current season or item follows the same terms.
Are older Overwatch skins still available?
Some older cosmetics have returned to the Hero Gallery, but that does not mean every legacy or limited-time skin is always obtainable. Blizzard’s Season 3 announcement said 300 legacy event hero skins had been added to the Gallery for purchase with Coins or Credits. That was a catalog update at that time, not a guarantee about today’s availability or the price of a particular skin. Check the Hero Gallery, current event announcements, or the shop for the item you want.

Is the Premium Battle Pass worth it?
There is no single answer independent of the player. Compare the live pass’s price, the rewards you specifically want, the progression required, and how much you expect to play. Blizzard’s Season 18 announcement describes seasonal cosmetics and up to 80 Mythic Prisms in the Premium Battle Pass, but that does not establish the value of a pass for every player or guarantee the same contents in another season.
Free seasonal rewards have also varied over time: Blizzard’s Season 17 announcement listed 600 Coins, 1,500 Credits, and two Epic skins among that season’s free rewards. Use past seasons as examples only; verify the current season’s rewards and live terms in game before deciding.

What Blizzard says about spending
In its 2022 Overwatch explainer, Blizzard described its goal this way: “Our goal is to make the game feel fair, enjoyable, and rewarding whether you choose to spend money on the Premium Battle Pass or not.” That is the company’s stated design goal, not independent evidence of player outcomes.
