Sonic had conspicuously human-like teeth in the first trailer for the 2019 Sonic the Hedgehog movie. After viewers reacted to that design, the film revealed a redesigned Sonic with teeth that were less prominent and more cartoon-like. That was a movie adaptation choice—not a rule about how Sonic looks in every game or other version.
Which Sonic had human-like teeth?
The teeth people usually mean are those of the CGI Sonic shown in the movie’s first 2019 trailer. His more humanized appearance made the teeth unusually noticeable. The Washington Post’s November 12, 2019 coverage described the original design’s teeth as human-like.

What changed in the redesign?
The version shown later in 2019 still had teeth; they were not simply removed. Instead, the redesign made them less prominent and more suited to a cartoon character. The Washington Post described the later teeth as cartoon-like, while the Los Angeles Times said they were more hidden and less shiny. The important difference is how the teeth were presented, not whether Sonic had any.
Why were Sonic’s teeth a design question?
Sonic’s teeth are not consistently visible in the games, leaving the film’s artists to interpret a feature that many players rarely see. In a Drexel University interview published February 7, 2020, animation and visual-effects program director Milady Bridges explained that adapting a 2D character for 3D means accounting for body parts and angles that may not appear in the original drawings.

The film also placed a stylized game character alongside real actors, so the production had to add detail while keeping Sonic recognizable. Director Jeff Fowler described that challenge in a 2020 WIRED interview: “The challenge was always going to be that this is a character that’s existed in games from the 16-bit era. Knowing that he was going to be on Earth with real actors, we knew he’d require a level of detail that no-one’s ever seen before.”

No. The human-like teeth are associated with the initial movie design, not a definitive design for Sonic across the franchise. SEGA dates the original Sonic the Hedgehog game to 1991, decades before the film’s 2019 redesign discussion; the company’s corporate history provides that franchise context. Game depictions do not consistently show Sonic’s teeth, so their appearance in the movie reflects an adaptation decision.
