For current releases, “Draft Booster box” is outdated wording: Play Boosters replaced Draft and Set Boosters starting with Murders at Karlov Manor. Check the exact set’s contents and box configuration before buying.
What happened to Draft Booster boxes?
Wizards of the Coast announced on October 16, 2023 that Draft Boosters and Set Boosters would be combined into Play Boosters, with Murders at Karlov Manor as the first set to use them. Play Boosters were designed to retain the Limited-play role of Draft Boosters while adding elements of the Set Booster opening experience. Wizards’ announcement describes the aim as combining “the play experience of a Draft Booster with the fun opening experience of a Set Booster.”
For a current set, look for its Play Booster box. Older Draft Booster boxes may still appear in resale listings, but availability and value depend on the specific older set and listing.
How the two products fit different play styles
Prerelease Pack: a set’s Sealed experience
A Prerelease is a player’s first opportunity to play a new set at a local game store, according to Wizards’ Prerelease guide. Participants open the set’s Prerelease Pack and build a 40-card Sealed deck from their pool, promo, and basic lands. If you are recreating Sealed at home, make sure you have basic lands; a store may provide them at an event.

Contents vary by release. For example, Wizards lists six Play Boosters, a foil year-stamped rare or mythic promo, and accessories in its Foundations and FINAL FANTASY Prerelease examples. The Foundations guide notes that an Arena code card is available only in select regions; the FINAL FANTASY guide names a deck box and spindown die. These examples are not a promise that every set’s pack has identical contents. Check the guide or product listing for the set you want: Foundations, FINAL FANTASY, and Secrets of Strixhaven.
Play Booster box: more packs for Draft or opening
Wizards describes Play Boosters as suitable for Draft or opening packs for fun in its MTG Product Guide. A box gives you multiple boosters for a larger opening or more than one play session, but the number of boosters in a box can vary by set. Confirm the quantity on the listing rather than assuming a universal box size.

Wizards’ Booster Draft format guide describes players opening a booster, selecting one card, and passing the rest, repeating the process through the packs before building decks of at least 40 cards. Its listed player range is two to eight. For a group or event, check the format instructions to determine how many packs each player needs.

- Set name: Make sure the Prerelease Pack or Play Booster box is for the set you intend to play or collect.
- Product contents: Read the set-specific guide or listing; Prerelease Pack extras are not identical across releases.
- Box quantity: Confirm how many Play Boosters the specific box contains.
- Sealed supplies: If playing at home, check whether you already have basic lands.
- Price: Compare current listings for the same set, region, and configuration. A box is not automatically cheaper per pack; prices vary by seller and date.
