A team advances to Knockouts as soon as it earns three wins, and is eliminated as soon as it takes three losses, so not every team plays all five rounds. The opening draw follows fixed tiers; from Round 2 onward, teams face random opponents with the same record, subject to a no-rematch rule.
How the five-round Swiss Stage works
Riot’s Worlds 2026 Primer describes a 16-team Swiss Stage lasting up to five rounds. Teams stay in contention while their records change from round to round. Reaching three match wins sends a team to Knockouts; reaching three match losses eliminates it. Either threshold can be reached before Round 5.
The format is not a single elimination bracket: losing once does not automatically end a team’s run. Instead, the next pairing depends on the teams’ records, until they qualify or are eliminated.
How the Round 1 draw works
For the opening round, Worlds 2026 divides the 16 teams into four tiers. Tier 1 teams draw from Tier 4, while Tier 2 teams draw from Tier 3. Teams from the same region cannot meet in Round 1.

How pairings work from Round 2 onward
In Rounds 2 through 5, teams are paired with random opponents who have the same record. Riot’s 2026 primer gives the example that 1–0 teams are matched with other 1–0 teams. The record pools evolve as results come in: for instance, a team that loses its opener joins the 0–1 group, while a winner joins the 1–0 group.

These rules constrain the draw: matching records is the starting point, but a previous opponent is not eligible for a repeat pairing.
What a 3–0, 3–1, or 0–3 record means
- Three wins: The team advances to Knockouts. A 3–0 record means it qualified without losing; a 3–1 record means it qualified after one loss.
- Three losses: The team is eliminated. A 0–3 record means it did not win a match; a 1–3 record means it earned one win before its third loss.
- Still below either threshold: The team remains in the Swiss Stage and is paired in a later round according to its record.
Which older rules should not be assumed for 2026
Riot’s 2023 and 2024 primers also describe the broad five-round Swiss structure and the three-win/three-loss thresholds. Their additional match-format details are historical: the 2023 and 2024 primers say non-advancement, non-elimination matches were best-of-one, while matches that advanced or eliminated a team were best-of-three. The 2026 primer cited here does not specify series length, so those older descriptions do not establish the 2026 format.

Likewise, the 2024 primer says the higher initial draw pool received side selection, with a coin flip when both teams came from the same pool. That is a 2024 rule, not a confirmed 2026 rule. For 2026, Riot’s primer is the source for the tiers, regional restriction, and no-rematch condition. The 2025 League Handbook also summarizes the format as 16 teams across five rounds, with eight advancing, but does not replace the current season’s draw specifics.
