If you want to play the series before Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, follow the games in release order within each era: the original Core Design classics, the Legend trilogy, then the Survivor trilogy. But you do not need to finish all of them—or any of them—to play Legacy of Atlantis. The official site describes the 2027 game as a reimagining of Lara Croft’s 1996 debut, not as a sequel that requires knowledge of the later stories.
Recommended Tomb Raider play order
For a broad series tour, use release order within each era. The franchise has several distinct story eras, so this route is clearer than treating every game as one continuous storyline.
Original era: Core Design games
- Tomb Raider (1996)
- Tomb Raider II (1997)
- Tomb Raider III: Adventures of Lara Croft (1998)
- Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation (1999)
- Tomb Raider: Chronicles (2000)
- Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness (2003)
For the first three games, Tomb Raider I–III Remastered is a modern-platform option; Crystal Dynamics says it includes the complete experience, expansions, and secret levels. Tomb Raider IV–VI Remastered covers the next three adventures in the classic sequence.
Legend era
- Tomb Raider: Legend (2006)
- Tomb Raider: Anniversary (2007)
- Tomb Raider: Underworld (2008)
Anniversary revisits the first game, but placing it after Legend preserves the release order and gives you the era’s story sequence as originally presented.

Survivor trilogy
- Tomb Raider (2013)
- Rise of the Tomb Raider (2015)
- Shadow of the Tomb Raider (2018)
Shadow of the Tomb Raider is the third and final entry in this trilogy. These three games form a separate modern origin-story era rather than required setup for Legacy of Atlantis.
What to play before Legacy of Atlantis
The most direct context is the original Tomb Raider from 1996, because the official announcement calls Legacy of Atlantis a reimagining of that debut. You can play the original, use Tomb Raider I–III Remastered, or skip straight to the new game. The official description does not make the Legend or Survivor games prerequisites, nor does it present Legacy of Atlantis as a confirmed sequel to those eras.

The Tomb Raider site describes the new game this way: “Built on Unreal Engine 5 by Crystal Dynamics and Flying Wild Hog, Legacy of Atlantis pairs stunning visuals with modern design sensibilities and unexpected new twists, all while staying true to the tone and atmosphere that defined Lara’s original journey.” That positions it as a new take on the original adventure, not a required next chapter after the other trilogies.
Choose a starting point by what you want
| Starting point | Play | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Original context | Tomb Raider (1996), or Tomb Raider I–III Remastered | You want to see the adventure that Legacy of Atlantis reimagines. |
| Legend era | Legend, Anniversary, Underworld | You want that era’s three-game release sequence; Anniversary is its retelling of the debut. |
| Survivor trilogy | Tomb Raider (2013), Rise, Shadow | You would rather start with Lara’s modern origin-story trilogy. |
These are preference-based entry points, not an objective ranking of gameplay quality. The release sequence and continuity groupings are established, but there is no controlled comparison that makes one era universally best to play.
