You can play Apex Legends on Steam and keep your existing progress, provided you use the Steam account linked to the EA Account that holds that progress. Progress is tied to the EA Account, not transferred by switching Steam links. Before launching the game, check your linked accounts—and don’t unlink or switch accounts unless you understand the consequences.
What you need before playing on Steam
- Apex Legends is available on Steam for PC, and an EA Account is required to play, according to the EA Apex Legends FAQ.
- Your progress is permanently tied to the EA Account where it was earned. Linking a Steam account gives access to the progress associated with that EA Account; it does not move progress to another EA Account. See EA’s Cross Progression guidance.
Check your EA and Steam link before launching
- Sign in to the EA Account you believe holds your Apex Legends progress.
- Open the EA Account settings and select Connected Accounts.
- Check which Steam account is connected. Confirm it is the account you intend to use to play.
- Launch Apex Legends from Steam using that linked account.
EA’s account-linking guidance explains how to check connected accounts. If you are new to the game, sign in to or create an EA Account and link your platform account; EA says that account stores your progress.
Can I switch between playing on Steam and EA App?
Yes. EA says you can switch between Steam and the EA app, but warns against launching the game through both clients simultaneously with the same linked account because it can cause progression issues. Use one client at a time.
What happens if Steam is linked to the wrong EA Account?
Unlinking Steam and connecting it to another EA Account is not a way to transfer your progress. EA warns that Steam entitlements remain with the EA Account first linked, and changing the link can cause access, Battle Pass leveling, or unlock issues. Before changing anything, identify the EA Account where your progress was earned and follow EA’s unlinking guidance. If you are unsure which account is involved, contact EA support rather than guessing.

How to recover progress after unlinking
If progress disappeared after you unlinked an account, EA’s guidance is to relink the platform account to the EA Account that contains the progress. See EA’s steps for finding lost progress. If the progress was earned on a separate EA Account, it cannot be moved into or merged with another one. EA also says content missed by the one-time Cross Progression merge cannot be restored or merged later.
How Cross Progression affects multiple profiles
EA introduced Cross Progression in October 2023. If a player had one Apex Legends account, the rollout did not change it. When multiple platform profiles were linked to one EA Account at rollout, EA selected the highest-level profile as the Cross Progression account. Progress on separate EA Accounts was not merged; content remained with the account where it was earned or purchased. EA says one EA Account can have only one Apex Legends profile, and profiles on two EA Accounts cannot be combined. See EA’s FAQ and Cross Progression help.
