Hanzo Hasashi’s pursuit of revenge makes him violent and sometimes an antagonist, while his later role as a protector gives him a more heroic purpose. The answer also depends on the timeline: in Mortal Kombat 1, Kuai Liang is Scorpion, and Hanzo is alive as a human.
Why Hanzo Hasashi is an antihero
The official Mortal Kombat character biography describes Hanzo as driven by rage after his family and clan were murdered. He pursued their killer, Quan Chi, and did not stop until he killed him. That grievance is understandable, but the violence of his revenge does not make every action justified. During this part of his story, Scorpion can be an antagonist as well as a sympathetic character.
How his role changes
Hanzo’s story later shifts from personal revenge toward responsibility for others. He leads a reborn Shirai Ryu and seeks to avenge people who cannot avenge themselves. That protective purpose puts him closer to a hero, but it does not erase his capacity for violence or settle his inner conflict: the official biography says he still fears his fiery spirit will consume him.
Who is Scorpion in Mortal Kombat 1?
The name does not belong to the same person in every timeline. In Mortal Kombat 1’s new timeline, Scorpion is Kuai Liang, while Hanzo Hasashi is alive as a human. The identity distinction is noted in Mortal Kombat Wiki’s Scorpion reference; Hanzo’s revenge-driven biography should not automatically be applied to Kuai Liang.

So, is Scorpion good or bad?
For Hanzo Hasashi, “antihero” is the clearest short answer: he behaves villainously during his revenge-driven period, then takes on a more protective role. For the Scorpion of Mortal Kombat 1, consider Kuai Liang’s actions in that timeline rather than assuming he shares Hanzo’s history. Naming the character and version gives a more accurate answer than assigning Scorpion one permanent moral label.
