There is no single switch that turns off police across every Grand Theft Auto game. In GTA V, Director Mode has a session-only Wanted Level: Disabled option; Story Mode offers a cheat to lower wanted stars, while GTA Online lets you pay Lester to remove an active wanted level. San Andreas uses different cheats, and FiveM server operators can configure police response separately.
First identify your game and mode: a GTA V Story Mode cheat, an Online service, and a FiveM server setting are not interchangeable.

Turn off wanted-level gain in GTA V Director Mode
Director Mode is the closest built-in off-style option described for GTA V. Its Wanted Level setting offers Normal, Low, Medium, High, and Disabled. Choose Disabled to prevent a wanted level from being gained for that Director Mode session. This is not a game-wide setting for Story Mode or GTA Online. Director Mode reference
Disabled does not guarantee that police or other forces will ignore the actor in every situation. The Director Mode reference cautions that law enforcement, military, or security forces may still attack if the actor is already in a battle or is directly attacked.

Lower wanted stars in GTA V Story Mode
In Story Mode, use the LAWYERUP cheat to lower your wanted level. PC Gamer lists PC and phone input, along with controller combinations for supported modern PlayStation and Xbox versions. The listed cheat adjusts wanted stars rather than disabling future wanted levels. The cited guide does not establish a permanent Story Mode settings-menu control for turning off the system.
Remove an active wanted level in GTA Online
Call Lester and pay the in-game fee to remove an active wanted level, as described in Rockstar’s GTA Online Starter Tips. This clears the current level; it is not a global off switch.

A Gameranx report dated December 23, 2025 said a Clear on Death option appeared in code but was disabled at the time. That report does not confirm the option is currently available, so it is not a dependable instruction for changing your Online settings. Gameranx report
Change wanted level in GTA: San Andreas

- TURNDOWNTHEHEAT removes the wanted level.
- IDOASIPLEASE locks the current wanted state.
- TURNUPTHEHEAT raises the wanted level by two stars.
- BRINGITON sets the wanted level to six stars.
Disable wanted stars or AI police on a FiveM server
If you mean “How do I disable the wanted level in FiveM?” or “How do I stop AI police from responding?”, the answer depends on whether you operate the server. A FiveM specialist guide describes using a client script with SetMaxWantedLevel(0) to prevent wanted stars. It also covers separate controls for existing wanted status, dispatch services, random cops, and scanner audio. Those are distinct behaviors: suppressing stars alone should not be treated as proof that every AI police response or audio feature is disabled. - This game will no longer support Windows 7 or 8 operating systems starting January 30, 2024.
This is a server scripting/configuration path, not a menu setting for a regular player. The guide warns that other scripts or events may reset the settings, so an operator may need to apply them again when a player loads.
How the wanted system differs from disabling it
GTA V displays one to five wanted stars according to police interest; at five stars, the National Guard is brought in, according to the Xbox-hosted Grand Theft Auto V game manual. Lowering or removing stars changes your current status; disabling wanted-level gain is a different kind of control, and only the Director Mode option above is described here as doing that for a GTA V session.
