How to Lose a Wanted Level in GTA Without Getting Caught

In GTA Online, Rockstar recommends Los Santos tunnels or paying Lester to remove a wanted level. GTA V story mode calls for breaking line of sight, but no method guarantees an escape.

If you mean GTA Online, Rockstar recommends using Los Santos tunnels to escape pursuing police, or calling Lester to remove your wanted level for an in-game fee. In GTA V story mode, break the police’s line of sight and stay out of view while the search continues—but no route or hiding place guarantees an escape. The exact options depend on which GTA game and mode you’re playing.

In GTA Online, use tunnels or call Lester

Rockstar’s GTA Online starter tips identify two ways to deal with a wanted level. They work differently: one is an evasion tactic; the other is an in-game service.

Option How it works Trade-off
Los Santos tunnels Use the tunnels to get away from pursuers. You must reach and navigate the tunnels while being chased. Rockstar recommends them but does not guarantee they will work in every pursuit.
Call Lester Lester can remove your wanted level for a fee. This costs in-game money. Rockstar’s cited advice does not state a price; check whether the service is available in your current session.

If you want to escape without paying, try the tunnel route. If you would rather use the paid option, contact Lester in-game and check the terms shown in your session.

In GTA V story mode, get out of sight

The Xbox-hosted GTA V game manual describes a wanted display of one to five stars, with the stars reflecting police interest. At five stars, the manual says the National Guard is called in.

  • FASTER LOADING — Quicker access to the action as the world of Los Santos and Blaine County load in faster than ever before.
  • ADAPTIVE TRIGGERS AND HAPTIC FEEDBACK — Feel every moment through the DualSense controller, from directional damage to weather effects, rough road surfaces to explosions, and more.
  • TEMPEST 3D AUDIO — Hear the sounds of the world with pinpoint precision: the throttle of a stolen supercar, the rattle of neighbouring gunfire, the roar of a helicopter overhead, and more.
  • Please note that although this game is Region Free or Region Unlocked and will work on all systems, this is the European version and may differ from the local version in age rating, labeling or instructions.

For a story-mode escape, put distance and obstacles between you and the police, then stay out of their view while the search is active. A community-maintained GTA V wanted-level reference also describes hiding from police sight. Treat this as practical guidance, not a promise: the manual establishes the star scale, but does not give an escape timer, exact route, or success rate.

  • Break line of sight rather than continuing to drive where police can track you.
  • Use the surroundings to get out of view and avoid drawing attention while the search is underway.
  • Do not assume a particular vehicle, hiding spot, or amount of time will always clear the wanted level.

Check which GTA game you are playing

These directions are not universal across the series. Rockstar’s tunnel and Lester advice is specifically for GTA Online; the cited manual covers GTA V. Secondary references describe different wanted systems in GTA IV and San Andreas, so do not assume the same search behavior or escape method applies there.
