The next Halo game is Halo: Campaign Evolved, a ground-up remake of Halo: Combat Evolved’s campaign. It launched on July 28, 2026, for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and PC/Steam. You can play solo, use two-player split-screen on console, or team up online across platforms with up to four players. You do not need to play another Halo game first to understand this story.
What kind of Halo game is Campaign Evolved?
Halo: Campaign Evolved retells the original Halo: Combat Evolved campaign. The story follows Master Chief and Cortana after their crash-landing on the ringworld Halo: the Chief must protect stranded shipmates from Covenant forces while uncovering a threat to life in the galaxy. Halo Studios describes this as a ground-up remake, with high-definition visuals, updated controls, refined level design, expanded narrative, and enhanced cinematics and sound. Halo Studios’ game announcement sets out the remake’s scope and premise.
You do not need background on Project Foundry or Halo Studios’ wider Unreal Engine 5 plans to follow the game. Foundry was described as a research and training effort, not a game or tech demo. Halo Studios’ studio-transition announcement explains that distinction.
What is new in the campaign?
The original adventure and three prequel missions
The campaign includes the original game’s 13 missions, alongside three new missions set before those events. The new missions feature Sergeant Avery Johnson and introduce characters, enemies, environments and dangers. Halo Studios’ announcement describes the original campaign, while its gameplay overview covers the additions.

Additional weapons, vehicles and Skulls
The remake adds nine weapons from across the Halo universe, including the Energy Sword and Battle Rifle. Vehicle changes include the ability to hijack enemy vehicles and an extra rear seat in the Warthog. Gameplay-modifying Skulls can change weapons, enemies, player attributes or environmental effects; Halo Studios says there are 42 unlockable Skulls. The LASO challenge uses a curated selection, not all 42, because some modifiers conflict or undercut the intended challenge, according to the studio’s July 2026 community Q&A.
How can you play solo or with friends?

These modes are listed in Halo Studios’ announcement. In co-op, the fireteam leader chooses whether friendly fire is enabled; the leader’s setting applies to the group, the studio says in its July 2026 Q&A.

What should you set up before inviting friends?
A Microsoft account and Gamertag are required. On Steam and PlayStation, you will be prompted to link your platform identity to a Microsoft account. Cross-platform invitations use Gamertags. Halo Studios’ account and play preparation guide also says story checkpoints, collectibles and customizations share across supported platforms when tied to the account.
If achievements matter to you, check the requirements for the specific achievement before enabling difficulty modifiers. Halo Studios says modifiers can block harder achievements such as LASO if anyone in the fireteam has them enabled, while some simpler achievements may still be available. Which platform should you choose?
The supported platforms are Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and PC/Steam. Since cross-platform co-op is available, you and your friends do not all need the same system. Choose the hardware you already use and the setup that fits how you want to play.
Digital Xbox editions support Xbox Play Anywhere between Windows PC and Xbox Series X|S, carrying progression, saves and customization between them. Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass were listed for day-one access at launch; because catalog availability can change by region and over time, check the current catalog before subscribing on that basis. What is known about the Collector’s Edition and handhelds?
The Xbox and PS5 Collector’s Editions included a physical game disc, SteelBook, 12-inch Master Chief statue, LED Cortana data-chip replica, three 11-by-17-inch concept-art prints and a physical manual modeled on the original. Halo Studios marked the Collector’s Edition sold out on June 8, 2026; that notice does not establish current resale stock or pricing. Check any listing for the correct platform, edition, seller and item condition. The official editions page lists the contents and sellout update.
In its July 2026 Q&A, Halo Studios reported Steam Deck as Verified and Windows handhelds as Handheld Optimized. Those are the ratings reported at that time; check current device-support information for changes after updates. The Q&A contains the ratings.
