The Green Lantern Corps is DC’s intergalactic peacekeeping force: its members use rings powered by green energy associated with willpower to protect their assigned sectors. The rings can turn a wearer’s imagination into hard-light constructs and grant abilities such as flight, protection and space travel—but their energy runs out, so Lanterns must recharge them.
Who are the Green Lantern Corps?
DC describes the Green Lantern Corps as an intergalactic police force whose members come from sentient species throughout the cosmos. Its base of operations is Oa, where the Central Power Battery serves as the organization’s energy reservoir. The Corps’ official character page calls its members “each a fearless warrior with indomitable willpower.” DC’s Green Lantern Corps character page also gives the organization an in-universe history of more than three billion years, 7,200 members and 3,600 sectors. Those are figures from DC’s character page, not real-world measurements or necessarily fixed facts in every continuity.
Among the human Lanterns named on that page are Hal Jordan, John Stewart, Guy Gardner, Kyle Rayner, Simon Baz and Jessica Cruz. Their shared role does not mean each character has the same origin or experiences the Corps in exactly the same way.
Hal Jordan’s ring is one example, not the rule
In DC’s account of Hal Jordan’s origin, alien Green Lantern Abin Sur crash-lands on Earth and entrusts Hal with his ring and Earth-sector duties. Abin explains that the Corps is made up of beings from across the cosmos, armed with rings fueled by green energy associated with willpower. This is one succession story, not a template for how every Lantern joins.

How does a power ring choose its wearer?
DC’s ring explainer says the Corps selects members for strength of will and that a stronger will makes a ring more effective. The ring is therefore not simply a device that grants power to anyone who picks it up: the wearer’s resolve matters to how well it works.
DC editor Matt Idelson adds a possible nuance in an interview: a ring’s choice may also reflect a personality profile resembling that of its previous wearer. Treat that as an editorial observation about selection, not a universal rule that every story applies identically.

What can a Green Lantern ring do?
A ring can shape green hard energy into constructs that reflect what its wearer imagines. A simple construct might restrain someone; a more elaborate one could take the form of a vehicle. The ring also has functions beyond constructs. DC’s explainer lists capabilities including:
- Creating a protective force field and generating a uniform.
- Flight and travel through space.
- Translating languages and accessing information from the Book of Oa.
- Emergency homing and communication with other Corps members.
These are capabilities described in DC’s official explainer; individual stories may emphasize or depict them differently. The ring’s versatility is not the same as unlimited power: it still depends on a finite charge.

How are the rings powered and recharged?
In DC’s account, the Central Power Battery on Oa is the Corps’ energy reservoir. Each Lantern’s personal power battery draws from that source and acts as a remote charging station for the ring. The chain is simple: Central Power Battery on Oa → personal power battery → ring.
DC’s 2011 explainer says a ring lasts approximately 24 Earth hours per charge and that use depletes its energy. That is a lore detail from that article, not a guarantee that every story follows an exact 24-hour limit. The same explainer says Lanterns recharge their rings by reciting the oath. When the charge is gone, the ring is inactive until it is charged again; Idelson described a drained ring as “a pretty piece of jewelry.”

The oath
DC’s Corps page says members speak the ancient oath before charging their rings. One version, as printed in DC’s ring explainer, reads:
“In Brightest Day, In Blackest Night, No Evil Shall Escape My Sight– Let Those Who Worship Evil’s Might, Beware My Power– Green Lantern’s Light!”

A ring can make a wide range of imagined tools and defenses, but the Lantern has to manage its available energy. A prolonged fight or other use can leave the ring depleted, turning recharge access into a practical tactical concern. The limitation gives opponents an opportunity to exploit timing or separation from a battery; it also means a Lantern cannot assume the ring will remain available indefinitely.
How do other Lantern colors fit in?
DC editors describe several other Corps colors through emotional associations: green with willpower, yellow with fear, blue with hope, red with rage, violet with love, orange with greed and indigo with compassion. These are not simply interchangeable versions of a Green Lantern ring. The colors carry different narrative associations, and the cited editorial discussion does not establish that every color has identical capabilities.
