To let another local user play a digital PS4 game, sign in to the PlayStation account that bought it and activate this console as that account’s primary PS4. Then switch to the other user and launch the game. Sony says other users on a primary PS4 can use applications purchased from PlayStation Store.
Activate the purchasing account’s primary PS4
- On the PS4, sign in to the account that purchased the game.
- Open Settings > Account Management > Activate as Your Primary PlayStation 4.
- Select Activate. Sony may activate a first PS4 automatically. If another PS4 is already primary for this account, deactivate it before switching. See Sony’s primary PS4 activation guide.
- Return to the other local user account and open the game. The purchase stays associated with the account that bought it; activation lets other users on that primary console use its PlayStation Store applications.
What can be shared—and what cannot
The setting applies to the account that owns the game. If another person’s account bought it, that purchasing account must activate this PS4 as its primary console for other local users to access the purchase.
PlayStation Plus sharing is separate from sharing a purchased game. Sony allows selected Plus benefits to be shared on the primary PS4, including online multiplayer (subject to parental-control settings), downloaded Monthly Plus games, qualifying games bought with a Plus discount, and catalog titles depending on the membership plan. Sharing does not let another user redeem Plus games, use online storage, enable automatic patch downloads, buy Plus-discounted products, or access early time-limited trials. Primary-console limit and changing PS4s
An account can have one primary PS4 at a time. To make a different console primary, deactivate the old one first. If you cannot access it, Sony says you can remotely deactivate all devices through Account Management; remote deactivation is available once every six months. Use Sony’s activation guide for the current deactivation options.

If the game is locked or will not start
- Check that you are signed into the account that owns the purchase and that the purchase is associated with that account.
- Confirm that this PS4 is activated as the purchasing account’s primary console.
- If the issue persists, contact PlayStation Support rather than trying unverified licensing fixes.
Keep accounts separate
Game access sharing does not require handing over the purchasing account’s credentials. Sony advises users: “Never share your account details with anyone else.” See Sony’s Account & Security guidance.
