Before buying, weigh what you can play today against the price, the evidence of ongoing updates, who handles support, and the refund terms for the exact store where you plan to pay.
Start with what the game offers today
If the game is in Early Access, distinguish playable content and current stability from features described as future plans. Valve says Early Access is a way to play while development continues, not a pre-purchase, and advises customers to buy based on the current state rather than promises about what may come later. A useful test is: Would I consider the game worth its price if none of the planned additions arrived? If the answer is no, waiting may be more suitable than paying now on the assumption that the roadmap will be completed.
Compare the store page with official updates
For an Early Access game, read its current-state description, the stated differences from a full release, update posts, and the communication channels the developer says it uses. Valve asks developers to provide this information and keep the store page current. Compare recent official posts with what the page says is included and planned.

Steam may display a notice on an Early Access page when the game has had no qualifying update build or update-type announcement for more than 12 months, according to Valve’s guidance checked October 7, 2026. This is a specific platform signal, not a prediction of what happens next. The absence of a notice does not prove that development is active or healthy.
Check who is responsible for the game and support
Look at the store listing’s developer and publisher credits, the official support channel, and any direct statement from the studio. If layoffs have been reported, separate confirmed announcements from speculation and note when each statement or report was made. A report about one studio cannot establish what will happen to another game, or even settle the future of every project at the studio in question.

For example, GamesRadar+ reported leadership departures, mass layoffs, and player refund concerns surrounding Ashes of Creation. Refund rules depend on the storefront, purchase channel, eligibility, and applicable conditions. The following are platform examples, not universal guarantees; policies and local rules may differ.

These thresholds describe storefront refund eligibility, not a special right triggered by layoffs or a development halt. Check the policy shown for your actual purchase channel before paying, especially if buying outside a PC storefront.

To compare versions or storefronts of the same game, use the same checks for each: included content, price, purchase channel, and refund terms. There is no robust, directly relevant published rate established here for how often layoffs lead to cancellations or material delays, so a percentage would not be a sound way to make this decision.
