Use Steam’s documented IUserReviewsService/GetAppReviews method for new integrations. It replaces the deprecated store.steampowered.com/appreviews/<appid>?json=1 route. The current method requires an appid inside the request’s input_json parameter, and its cursor-based pagination and response fields differ from the legacy endpoint.
Use the current GetAppReviews endpoint
The endpoint is https://api.steampowered.com/IUserReviewsService/GetAppReviews/v1/. Steam identifies this service method as the replacement for the legacy /appreviews route. New integrations should follow the current method’s request and response documentation rather than copy legacy query parameters.
Steam’s Web API service method accepts an input_json parameter. The essential request pattern is:
GET https://api.steampowered.com/IUserReviewsService/GetAppReviews/v1/?input_json={"appid":APP_ID,"filter":"recent","num_per_page":100,"cursor":"*"}
Replace APP_ID with the Steam application’s numeric app ID. The example illustrates the service request envelope and option choices; when putting JSON or cursor values in a URL, encode them correctly for the HTTP client you use. The Steam method reference documents the parameters and accepted enum values.

Choose filters for the job
The filter affects which reviews appear and whether paging is suitable for exhausting a result set.
| Parameter | Documented behavior |
|---|---|
filter |
Helpful is the default; other choices are Recent, Updated, and Funny. Helpful ranks by helpfulness within a day range and can widen that range to find results. Steam recommends Recent or Updated when paging through all reviews, because Helpful is designed to return results. |
languages |
An API language-code list. An empty value means English; all requests every language. |
day_range |
Applies only to Helpful. It defaults to 30, has a maximum of 365, and 0 means no limit. |
review_type |
Choose all, positive, or negative. |
purchase_type |
Defaults to Steam purchases only; options also allow all reviews or non-Steam purchases. |
num_per_page |
Defaults to 20; maximum is 100. |
filter_offtopic_activity |
Off-topic activity is excluded by default. Set to false to include it. |
display_language |
Sets the language of review_score_desc; defaults to English. |
use_review_quality |
Helpful-filter option; defaults to true. |
date_range_start and date_range_end |
Unix timestamps for created-date bounds. The start bound is ignored unless an end bound is also supplied. |
Parameter defaults and limits above are those in Steam’s GetAppReviews reference. The day_range setting does not apply to Recent, Updated, or Funny.

Page through reviews with the returned cursor
Pagination is cursor-based, not offset-based. Omit cursor or set it to * for the first request. For each next request, pass the cursor returned by the previous response, URL-encoding it when necessary. Keep the other query settings consistent across requests so each cursor continues the same query.
- Request the first page with a deliberate filter, such as
RecentorUpdated, and a page size no greater than 100. - Read the response’s
cursorvalue and send it unchanged as the cursor on the next request. - Repeat until the selected query returns an empty
reviewslist.
Steam’s documentation recommends Recent or Updated for exhaustive paging; Helpful may expand its date window to return results rather than behave as a straightforward way to walk every review.

Understand the response and migrate legacy code
The new response includes query_summary, reviews, cursor, day_range_used, and total_matching. Summary score and total fields are returned only on the first page and only when review_type is All, according to Steam’s method documentation.
Change from legacy /appreviews |
What to change in your client |
|---|---|
No success field |
Check the HTTP status rather than expecting a legacy JSON success flag. |
author.num_games_owned is no longer returned |
Do not depend on that field being present. |
weighted_vote_score is numeric |
Parse and store it as a number rather than the legacy string representation. |
Each review has a new refunded field |
Allow consumers of review objects to handle the additional field. |
total_matching and day_range_used are new |
Use these documented fields where relevant; do not assume they exist in legacy responses. |
These differences are listed in Steam’s migration notes. Build clients around the documented fields and the response to the chosen request, not assumptions that every field appears on every page.

Authentication, rate limits, and errors
The method reference says an optional publisher authentication key can be associated with the app for a higher rate limit. Requests without an associated key share a lower rate limit. Steam documents HTTP 429 for a rate-limited call, but the reference does not state a numeric quota or reset interval. Handle 429 as a rate-limit response and avoid hard-coding an unsupported request budget.
For context, Steam’s older User Reviews – Get List documentation describes the legacy route and query-string behavior. It is useful when updating an existing integration, but Steam marks that route deprecated in favor of the current service method.
