A free PS4 game claim is tied to the PlayStation account that redeemed it. Other users can play eligible downloaded games on that account’s primary PS4, but console sharing does not give them their own claim. Whether access lasts depends on the kind of offer: a purchased game, a PlayStation Plus Monthly Game, a catalog title, and a limited promotion can have different conditions.
Who owns the claim?
The account that redeems or purchases a digital game is the account associated with its license. If another person on the same PS4 can launch it, that is shared console access—not a transfer of the claim to their account. PlayStation specifically says redeeming PlayStation Plus games on another account is not a shareable benefit.

So, “free” does not by itself mean every account owns a copy or that access is permanent. First identify whether the game was an outright purchase, a Monthly Game claimed through Plus, access from a Plus game catalog, a time-limited promotion, or a free-to-play title. The conditions for one category should not be assumed to apply to another.
How sharing works on a primary PS4
Each PlayStation account can activate one PS4 as its primary console. On that console, other local users can access applications purchased from PlayStation Store and selected PlayStation Plus benefits, subject to the game and benefit rules. For a Plus subscriber’s primary PS4, PlayStation lists downloaded Monthly Plus games among benefits that can be shared. Eligible downloaded games bought with a Plus discount and some catalog titles may also be shared, depending on the plan and benefit rules. Other benefits—including redeeming a Plus game on another account, online storage, and automatic patch downloads—are not shared. Sharing access on the primary console does not let the second user carry the license to a different console or claim the game for their own account. On a different PS4, access is associated with the owner account signing in; PlayStation’s 2013 FAQ gives historical context for this distinction, while current activation and Plus rules are covered by the support pages above. Does a claimed free game stay playable forever?
There is no single answer for every offer. An outright digital purchase and a PlayStation Plus benefit are different entitlements. For a Plus game, PlayStation’s troubleshooting guidance tells players to confirm that their subscription is active and that the game is still available under the relevant access rules. Catalog access is not the same as owning a separate permanent copy, and the word “free” does not establish the terms of an unspecified promotion. Check the offer details and the account’s transaction history rather than assuming every claim is permanent.
PlayStation Plus benefits and membership status are described in its PlayStation Plus support page. The exact title and offer matter; without them, it is not possible to say that a particular claim remains available indefinitely.

What to check if the game is locked or missing
- Sign into the account that claimed or purchased it. Check that you are using the correct PlayStation account, then review its transaction history for the purchase or redeemed voucher. A different local user may be able to play through sharing, but is not the claimant.
- Identify the entitlement type. If access comes from Plus, confirm the membership is active and that the title remains available under the applicable Plus rules. PlayStation’s game launch troubleshooting guide recommends checking the account, subscription, and game availability.
- Check primary PS4 activation. If the owner’s account is meant to share the game with another local user, make sure this console is activated as that account’s primary PS4. The setting is at Settings > Account Management > Activate as Your Primary PlayStation 4.
- Restore licenses. On PS4, go to Settings > Account Management > Restore Licenses, then select Restore. PlayStation says this can help with a padlock icon, missing games or add-ons, and some crashes; restoring licenses does not affect saved data. See PlayStation’s license restoration instructions.
- Continue with basic service checks. If the lock remains, check PlayStation Network service status and whether the PS4 system software is current, then use PlayStation Support’s guidance for the specific error.
Which account and console situation applies?
