Choose Wordle if you like narrowing down one five-letter word with letter-by-letter feedback and a six-guess limit. Choose Connections if you prefer spotting a theme among words and testing which items belong together. Neither is a universal winner: the better fit depends on the kind of puzzle you enjoy.
How do Wordle and Connections work?
Wordle: narrow down one word
Wordle asks you to guess a five-letter word in six tries or fewer, according to the NYT Games App Store listing. Each guess gives you letter feedback to use as you consider the next candidate. The central task is to turn those clues into a solution before you run out of guesses.
Connections: find the shared theme
Connections presents words and asks you to find the themes linking them, as described by the New York Times Help Center. Rather than following letter clues toward one answer, you test which words fit together under a category. The Help Center also describes category difficulty and order, and a mistake histogram in the game’s stats interface.
Which puzzle style suits you?
| What you enjoy | Likely fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Using concrete clues to narrow a candidate answer | Wordle | Its guesses provide letter feedback toward one five-letter solution. |
| Making associations and spotting a hidden pattern | Connections | You look for themes that link several words, then test possible groupings. |
| A clearly defined target and a fixed attempt ceiling | Wordle | The game gives you up to six tries to identify the word. |
| Ambiguous clues and category discovery | Connections | The challenge is deciding which shared theme best explains a set of words. |
These are recommendations based on each game’s rules, not measured differences in difficulty, speed, or enjoyment. The available sources do not establish that one game is objectively harder or more rewarding for every player.

How do mistakes and progress differ?
In Wordle, the six-guess ceiling makes each attempt part of a finite sequence: use the feedback to refine your next guess. In Connections, the interface includes a mistake histogram in its stats, and the Help Center describes category difficulty and order. These features frame progress differently, but they do not establish a directly comparable difficulty score between the games. The sources reviewed do not provide comparative solve-time, solve-rate, or difficulty statistics, so there is no supported basis for claiming that one is faster or harder overall.

The NYT Games app Help Center page says its leaderboards track daily Wordle guesses and Connections matches. If comparing your play with others matters, that is a shared app feature—not evidence that the two puzzles measure the same skill or effort.

Which one should you try first?
- Pick Wordle if you want a single answer, feedback after each guess, and a clear six-try limit.
