You can’t guarantee that a Baldur’s Gate 3 update will leave every mod working. Protect your saves and load order first, then use the right update path for each mod: the in-game Mod Manager for supported mods, and the mod author’s current notes for third-party mods. If a problem follows the update, troubleshoot with mods disabled before deciding whether to contact the author or Larian.
Before updating, protect your saves and load order
Record the game version currently installed and note which mods are active. Back up any saves you care about, especially before disabling or removing mods: some mods can affect an existing save when removed.

If you use BG3 Mod Manager, save your load order to an external JSON file before changing anything. The project also documents exporting the active order to the game. These are useful backup steps, not a Larian requirement or a guarantee of compatibility. See the BG3 Mod Manager project documentation.
Check how each mod is updated
Larian-supported mods
Open the in-game Mod Manager and select the Installed tab. When an Update button appears for a supported mod, use it there. Larian’s built-in update and sync features apply to its supported pipeline; they do not establish that a third-party mod is current.

Third-party mods
Check each mod’s author page or release notes for compatibility with the game build you have installed. Do not assume an update is available—or that a mod still works—just because it appears in a load order or worked before the patch. Larian warns that updates can cause mod issues, especially with third-party mods, and says those mods do not receive the same built-in update and sync functions or full technical support as mods in its official pipeline. Update the game and test the result
- Finish your backups. Keep your save backup and, if applicable, the exported load-order JSON somewhere you can find them.
- Update Baldur’s Gate 3 through the platform you use to install it. The available game version can vary by platform and region, so check the version shown on your own installation rather than relying on an assumed build number.
- Check mod status again. Use the Installed tab for supported mods and the authors’ current notes for third-party mods.
- Launch and test cautiously. If the game behaves unexpectedly, avoid overwriting a save you may need to recover. A backup reduces the risk of losing your own load-order or save data; it cannot make an incompatible mod work.
Larian describes the trade-off this way: “While there are always risks of mods breaking – especially when your game updates – supported mods aim to offer greater compatibility and the ability to be used on all platforms.” That aim is not a promise that every supported mod will survive every update, nor that every PC mod is available on console or Mac. Availability across platforms is curated and subject to technical limits and testing. Larian’s official mod-support page has current guidance.
If mods stop working after an update
First isolate whether a mod is involved
- Preserve your saves and load-order backup. Do this before disabling or removing mods.
- Disable official mods and test again. Larian recommends this as a diagnostic step. If the issue goes away, a mod is likely involved; that alone does not identify which mod is responsible.
- For a third-party mod problem after a major update, follow Larian’s removal guidance. On Windows, its troubleshooting page identifies the game installation’s
DataModsandDataPublicfolders, the local AppData profile folder, andmodsettings.lsxas locations to inspect. Do not delete files blindly: keep backups and follow the current steps on Larian’s support page.

%LocalAppData%Larian StudiosBaldur's Gate 3. modsettings.lsxmay matter when a profile was not created for the current patch. Larian also notes that old profile or configuration files may in some circumstances be copied from Documents.
These paths are for Larian’s Windows troubleshooting instructions; they are not instructions for console or Mac. If you use BG3 Mod Manager, its documentation also describes checking whether an invalid mod is causing modsettings.lsx to reset. Treat that as manager-specific guidance, not a Larian guarantee.
Choose the right support route
- If the issue disappears with mods disabled, contact the relevant mod author. Larian says it cannot directly manage or fix player-created mods.
- If the issue remains when mods are disabled, contact Larian Support.
For multiplayer and cross-platform play
For a modded multiplayer session, every participant needs the same mods at the same versions. Supported mods can show an Update button in the in-game Installed tab; third-party version checks may require the relevant author page or manager. Cross-saves can also be affected by different game versions, so check version parity and whether the mods you need are supported on each platform before relying on cross-platform play.

Do not assume that a mod available on PC will also be available on console or Mac. Larian’s supported cross-platform catalog is curated, and availability is constrained by platform requirements and testing.
