That split helps identify whether to troubleshoot a mod or report a possible base-game issue. For the official baseline located on October 7, 2026, Larian’s latest listed update is Hotfix #36, version 4.1.1.7209685, dated March 26, 2026; Patch 8 was the final major content update, but hotfixes continued. Start by recording what changed
Before changing files, note your platform, exact game version or build, mod manager, and whether each mod came from the in-game Mod Manager or a third-party source. Write down the symptom and when it occurs: launching, loading a save, opening a menu, viewing textures, character creation, or joining multiplayer. Larian lists launch crashes, saves that stall at a percentage, UI overlaps or missing options, shader or texture problems, and character-appearance issues among mod-related problems. Update the mod type you are using

Disable mods to isolate the problem
- In the game’s Mod Manager, uncheck installed mods and retry the action that failed.
- If the problem stops with mods disabled, re-enable mods selectively to narrow down the cause. Check compatibility, dependencies, and conflicts, then contact the relevant author through the mod listing with your symptom and game version.
- If the problem remains with mods disabled, treat it as a possible base-game issue and report it to Larian. Larian does not directly manage or fix player-created mods.

Clean up third-party PC mod files carefully
For launch or in-game problems involving third-party mods, Larian advises removing existing mod files. Back up saves and any configuration you want to preserve before deleting anything. In the game installation’s Data folder, check for Mods and Public folders; Larian says these folders, if present, are safe to delete. Also inspect %LocalAppData%Larian StudiosBaldur's Gate 3Mods for leftover files.
If you are reusing an old profile rather than creating one for the current patch, Larian says modsettings.lsx may also be deleted. This resets mod configuration, so preserve a copy first if you may need it. Avoid deleting unrelated folders or files: the advice here concerns the listed mod locations and configuration file. Check the old Documents location
The game uses local AppData rather than Documents. However, if the game’s AppData folder does not exist and a Baldur’s Gate 3 folder does exist in Documents, old profiles and configuration may be copied into AppData when the game starts. That migration can bring old mod files along, so inspect the old location if the problem returns after cleanup.
Read a launcher data-mismatch warning
Larian says the launcher creates a log of unexpected files in the installation and Mods folders. Check %LocalAppData%Larian StudiosLauncherCache for steam_<Current.Version.Number>_alteredFiles.txt; for GOG, look for a corresponding galaxy_... file. Verify the load order in BG3 Mod Manager
If you use LaughingLeader’s BG3 Mod Manager, arranging mods in the manager is not enough: export the active order to the game so it updates modsettings.lsx. The maintainer’s repository gives this workflow:
- Run the game once to create its folders and a profile.
- Refresh campaign mod data if needed.
- Select the Public profile and arrange the active mods.
- Choose Export Load Order to Game.
Keep the Mods directory free of subfolders. The maintainer warns that subfolders can cause the game to reset modsettings.lsx; if the order resets on launch, an erroring mod may be responsible. See the BG3 Mod Manager repository for its setup and load-order guidance.

Make multiplayer mod lists match
Every player joining a modded multiplayer game needs the same mods at the same versions. When the verification window appears, it may offer options to download, enable, update, or downgrade mods to match the save or session. If players still cannot join, compare the full mod lists and version numbers rather than only checking whether each person has a mod with the same name. Choose the right place to report it
- Issue disappears when mods are disabled: contact the mod author through the listing and include the game build, mod version, and exact symptom.
- Issue continues with mods disabled: report a possible base-game problem to Larian.
- Third-party setup still prevents launch after cleanup: check the launcher’s altered-files log and use Larian support if removing the relevant mod files does not resolve it.
