Before updating Baldur’s Gate 3, check Larian’s latest release note and the version shown on your platform, back up saves you care about, confirm your mods are compatible, and leave enough free storage for installation. Larian’s latest notice located here is the September 29, 2026 small hotfix, version 4.1.1.7631656; it lists fixes for GOG Mac launcher startup, PS5 map-marker crashes, and beard appearance. It does not provide a complete version list for every platform, so do not assume every player receives the same build.
What is the latest Baldur’s Gate 3 update?
Larian Community Team’s September 29, 2026 Small Hotfix names game version 4.1.1.7631656. The notice says it addresses a crash when starting through the GOG Mac launcher, a crash when creating map markers on PS5, and a beard appearance issue. These are the fixes named in that announcement, not a guarantee that every issue on those platforms is resolved.
The notice does not give a full current version matrix across PC, Mac, Steam Deck, PlayStation, and Xbox. Compare the release note with the version displayed by your own launcher or console rather than treating a version number from another platform or an older announcement as universal. For context, Larian’s August 2026 Xbox Play Anywhere announcement listed PC and PS5 at 4.1.1.7398727, Steam Deck at 4.1.1.7451994, and Xbox at 4.1.1.7445165. Those are dated August figures, not the September hotfix’s version list.
What to check before updating
- Match the release note to your platform and installed version. Read the latest official Larian notice, then check the version shown in your platform’s game or launcher interface. Platform builds can differ; Larian’s August 2026 announcement listed distinct numbers for PC and PS5, Steam Deck, and Xbox.
- Read the specific fixes and issues. The September hotfix identifies GOG Mac startup, PS5 map markers, and beard appearance. Earlier updates also targeted platform-specific problems: Larian’s March 2026 Hotfix #36 notes covered crashes and frame drops when loading saves, an Xbox inventory/trade tooltip issue, and a Mac Honour Mode character-creation blocker. A fix list tells you what an update intends to address; it does not establish that every player’s problem is fixed.
- Back up important saves before a major transition. A past major update illustrates why this matters: Larian’s Patch 9 preparation notice said saves from Patch 8 or earlier would not be compatible with Patch 9. In that specific situation, Larian advised using a new profile and backing up the previous local profile folder if players wanted to preserve older saves. That historical change is not evidence that the September 2026 hotfix invalidates saves. Keep a separate copy of saves you cannot afford to lose, and follow current platform-specific instructions rather than applying old branch or rollback steps blindly.
- Check mods before opening a modded save. Larian’s mod support page says a mod requiring an update shows an “Update” button in the in-game Mod Manager. For modded multiplayer, all players need exactly the same mods at the same versions. Larian has also warned that patches and hotfixes can temporarily make mods incompatible, so check for mod updates before loading a campaign that depends on them.
- Confirm cross-save compatibility. Larian cautions that cross-saves may fail when game versions differ between platforms. It also recommends checking that mods used across PC and console are available on both. If you plan to move between devices, compare the versions and mod sets on both ends before relying on a cross-save.
- Allow for installation storage, not only the download size. Do not reuse an old patch’s space estimate as a current requirement. In a March 2026 clarification about Hotfix #36, Larian Community Manager Salo explained that Steam or GOG may need temporary disk space to recompile existing game files; that extra space should be freed after installation. Check the space request shown by your platform when updating, and avoid starting with storage so tight that a temporary installation step cannot complete.
Why patch notes and versions can differ by platform
A game-wide announcement may identify fixes without listing every platform’s exact build. Larian’s September 2026 hotfix notice names platform-specific issues but does not publish a complete version matrix. Its August announcement demonstrates that separate platform version numbers can be used. The safest check is therefore two-part: read the official note for the fixes relevant to your device, then verify the installed and offered version in your own platform interface.

Hotfixes can also address narrow problems rather than changing every player’s experience in the same way. For example, the September notice lists a GOG Mac launcher issue and a PS5 map-marker issue alongside an appearance fix. If none applies to your setup, the notice still helps identify the build, but it is not a reason to assume that a separate issue has been addressed.

There is no current universal storage figure established by the cited notices. Patch size and installation requirements are release-specific, and Steam or GOG may request temporary working space while recompiling files already on disk. Use the space requirement displayed for the update you are installing; distinguish that temporary installation request from the game’s permanent installed size.

When should you wait before launching?
- You rely on mods: wait until the mods you need have compatible updates, especially before opening a campaign or joining a modded multiplayer session.
- You use cross-saves: verify that both platforms have compatible game versions and that the same required mods are available on each.
- You are preserving an older campaign: make a separate save backup before a major patch, and do not infer from an old compatibility warning that a new hotfix will invalidate it.
- You are short on disk space: wait until you can meet the platform’s installation request, including any temporary working space.
